DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nThis course aims at practicing known statistical co
ncepts\, which have been covered in our course "Introduction to statistics
with R". \nThis two-day course will be taught in an "inverse classroom" s
tyle: the students will be organized in groups and will analyze various bi
omedical datasets\, using information provided by the trainers. The groups
will present their results which will then be discussed with the other gr
oups and the trainers.\nThe datasets will be chosen to allow to cover the
most common questions that arise during statistical analysis\, including t
he assumptions of tests (and the requirement for normality of data in part
icular)\, the handling of outliers and of missing data.\n# Audience\n\nThe
course is targeted at researchers who have already followed a basic stati
stics course (equivalent to our course "Introduction to statistics with R
") and have a working knowledge of the R statistical package (equivalent t
o either the introduction to statistics course\, or to the "First steps wi
th R course"). Fluency in R is absolutely required for this course.\nThe c
ourse is problem-based and requires active participation from everyone.\n\
n# Learning objectives\n\nAt the end of the course\, participants will be
able to:\n\nchoose basic statistical methods in order to analyse a dataset
\ntake care of common issues arising during a statistical analysis\nperfor
 m a statistical analysis\ncommunicate the results of the analysis\, both o
rally and in writing form\n\n\n# Prerequisites\n\n##### Knowledge / compet
encies\n\n\nBasic knowledge of statistics (see Audience section)\, in part
icular knowledge of what statistical tests are is required\nWorking knowle
dge of R\, including ability to load data into R\, select data of interest
 \, plot data\, perform basic tests\n\n\n##### Technical\n\n\n A Wi-Fi enab
led laptop with latest R and RStudio. There will be access to the eduroam a
 nd public-unil networks.\n \n \n# Application\n\nRegistration fees are 200
CHF for academics and 1000 CHF for for-profit companies. While particip
ants are registered on a first come\, first served basis\, exceptions may
be made to ensure diversity and equity\, which may increase the time befor
e your registration is confirmed. \n\nApplications will close as soon as t
he places will be filled up. Deadline for free-of-charge cancellation is i
s set to 24 March 2023 . Cancellation after this date will not be reimbur
sed. Please note that participation to SIB courses is subject to our gener
al conditions\, available here.\n\nYou will be informed by email of your r
egistration confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, parti
cipants will be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 da
ys.\n\n# Venue and time\n\nThis course should be held in person at the Uni
versity of Lausanne (Metro M1 line\, Sorge station).\n\n It will start at
9:00 CET and end around 17:00 CET. \n\nPrecise information will be provide
d to the participants before the course.\n\nMore details about the schedul
 e can be found [here](https://sib-swiss.github.io/Data-analysis-in-practic
 e/course_schedule/)\n\n# Additional information\n\nCoordination: Grégoire
Rossier\nWe will recommend 0.5 ECTS credits for this course (given a pass
ed exam at the end of the session).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the
SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all future courses and workshop
s\, as well as all important deadlines using the form here.\n\nPlease note
that participation in SIB courses is subject to our general conditions.\n
