DESCRIPTION:# Overview\n\n\n* **Duration**: 2 weeks\, 5 hours per week\n* F
ree\n* Certificate of Achievement available on satisfactory completion\n*
**CPD Approval**: Royal College of Pathologists (10 credits)\n* **Start Da
te**: The course is run ‘live’ for 2 weeks from the start date above.
Once this period is over there will be no live monitoring of the forums\,
but you can still join and complete the course during the remaining period
.\n\n### Why join the course?\n\nJoin us in our quest to discover what mak
es microbes dangerous. Use bioinformatics to probe genomes\, to explore an
d represent DNA and protein sequences. Then\, use databases to find protei
n sequences’ conserved domains and investigate their functions.\n\n### W
ho is the course for?\n\nThe course will be of interest to undergraduates\
 , post-graduates\, researchers\, bioinformaticians\, biomedical researcher
s\, microbiologists\, healthcare professionals and all those who are inter
ested in learning about the underlying mechanisms of bacterial disease\, D
NA sequences and protein data\, or how to use online analytical tools to p
robe genomes.\n\nThe topics covered in this course are applicable to the g
enomes of all organisms. It is not essential to have previous knowledge or
experience in bioinformatics. Scientific terminology is explained. The op
portunity to use online computational tools in the context of bacterial ge
nomes will also be of interest to teachers and their 16-18-year-old scienc
e and computing students.\n\n### What do people say about this course?\n\n
"_Clear introduction of the – often viewed as complex – field of bioin
formatics_." Mqondisi Tshabalala\, PhD student\, Institute for Cellular an
d Molecular Medicine\, University of Pretoria\, South Africa "_Highlights
of the course were the investigations with the databases - these reinforce
d the learning._" Dr. Alan McLintic\, Anaesthesiologist\, Faculty of Medic
ine and Health Scientists\, University of Auckland\, New Zealand\n\n# Prog
ramme and start dates\n\n### Course start dates\n\nThis course will be rep
 eated:\n\nNext start dates:\n\n* September 2019 (date TBC)\n\n### What top
ics will you cover?\n\n\n* Bioinformatics tools\, DNA and protein sequence
s\n* Retrieving DNA and protein sequences from repositories\n* Databases f
or protein annotation\n* Inferring function from sequence\n\n### What will
you achieve?\n\nBy the end of the course\, you'll be able to...\n\n* asse
ss DNA representations and protein sequences\n* perform searches in primar
y databases (repositories) and retrieve gene/protein data\n* interpret dif
ferent repository submission formats\n* investigate biological databases f
or research\n* identify the putative function of proteins based on their c
onserved domains\n\n# Educators\n\n## **Lead Educators**\n\n### Dr Anna Pr
otasio\n\nI am a researcher in parasitology and life sciences. I am passio
nate about bioinformatics and how we can use these tools to answer questio
ns in biology.\n\n### Martin Aslett\n\nI am the IT Manager for the Wellcom
e Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences team. My inter
ests lie in bioinformatics and its application to microbial genomics.\n\n#
 ## Dr Christine Boinett\n\nI am a researcher in bacterial genetics and my
interest is in understanding the development of resistance in bacterial pa
thogens using next generation sequencing techniques.\n\n## **Educator**\n\
n### Matthew Dorman\n\nI am a graduate student at the Wellcome Sanger Inst
itute\, where I research the virulence and the molecular genetics of bacte
rial pathogens as part of the Infection Genomics programme.\n\n## **Progra
mme Lead Educator**\n\n### Professor Nicholas Thomson\n\nGroup Leader at t
he Wellcome Sanger Institute\, interested in bacterial evolution and the s
pread of infectious disease\; provides scientific oversight for this cours
e.\n\nThe course also features interviews with two distinguished experts:\
n\n### Dr Rob Finn\n\nTeam Leader of EMBL-EBI Sequence Families Team\n\n##
 # Dr Claire Chewapreecha\n\nSir Henry Wellcome Fellow and Lecturer\, Unive
rsity of Cambridge\, UK\, and King Mongkut University of Technology\, Thai
land.\n\n# What's Included\n\nWellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and
Scientific Conferences are offering everyone who joins this course a free
digital upgrade\, so that you can experience the full benefits of studying
online for free. This means that you get:\n\n* Unlimited access to this c
ourse\n* Includes any articles\, videos\, peer reviews and quizzes\n* Test
s to validate your learning\n* A PDF Certificate of Achievement to prove y
 our success when you’re eligible\n\n# CPD Approval\n\n\n\n
