DESCRIPTION:## Overview\nThis course will introduce participants to the pro
cess of publishing biodiversity data in the Global Biodiversity Informatio
n Facility (GBIF)\, using the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT)\, with a
focus for the research community. The IPT is a powerful\, widely used too
l developed by GBIF for publishing biodiversity and ecological data\, incl
uding species occurrences and sampling events\, in a standardized\, FAIR-c
ompliant format. \n\nParticipants will gain hands-on experience in prepari
ng\, structuring\, and publishing datasets via the IPT\, making them avail
able for global reuse through the global platform of GBIF. The course will
leverage documentation and learning resources from GBIF\, including: \n\n
 * [Introduction to GBIF ](https://docs.gbif.org/course-introduction-to-gbi
f/en)\n* [GBIF Data Mobilization Course ](https://docs.gbif.org/course-dat
 a-mobilization/en/)\n* [IPT User Manual ](https://ipt.gbif.org/manual/en/i
 pt/latest/how-to-publish)\n\n\nMany researchers\, naturalists\, collection
managers\, and institutions in Switzerland and beyond spend countless hou
rs gathering species occurrence and ecological data. Yet a large proportio
n of this invaluable information never makes it into global biodiversity d
ata networks\, despite the various channels that exist in Switzerland\, es
tablished by specific partner networks (Infospecies data centres and natur
al history museums) that facilitate the dissemination of data in an organi
sed manner. When datasets remain unpublished\, the effort behind them stay
s hidden from the broader scientific and conservation communities and cann
ot contribute to the global understanding of species distributions\, trend
s\, and environmental change. By participating in this course\, you will g
ain the knowledge and practical skills to overcome technical and conceptua
l barriers to publishing your datasets through the Global Biodiversity Inf
ormation Facility (GBIF)\, the world’s largest open-access platform for
biodiversity occurrence data.\n\nThe course addresses the growing demand f
or FAIR data publication in biodiversity research\, aligning with Swiss an
d international open science initiatives. Researchers and biodiversity dat
a holders will learn to make their data discoverable\, accessible\, intero
perable\, and reusable (FAIR). Publishing your data in standardised\, FAIR
-compliant formats not only increases its visibility and reuse potential b
ut also bolsters Swiss contributions to global research and biodiversity m
onitoring initiatives. GBIF-mediated data are widely used in ecology\, con
servation planning\, climate research\, and policy analysis\, and underpin
thousands of scientific studies annually. By learning to use the Integrat
ed Publishing Toolkit (IPT) and relevant community standards such as Darwi
n Core\, you will be able to transform datasets that might otherwise langu
ish on local drives or in inaccessible formats into interoperable resource
 s discoverable by researchers around the world.\n\n\n\n## Audience\nThis c
ourse is designed for PhD students\, postdoctoral and other researchers in
the life sciences who are working with species occurrences\, ecological m
onitoring data or other pertinent data. \n\nAimed at beginners\, the trai
ning combines clear explanations with hands‑on exercises that demystify
the data‑publishing process and empower you to take the next step beyond
data collection: data mobilisation. You’ll learn how to ensure your har
d work contributes to global efforts to understand\, protect\, and restore
biodiversity. By sharing your data openly\, you help build a richer\, mor
e complete picture of life on Earth and amplify the impact of your researc
h within Switzerland and internationally.\n\n## Learning outcomes\nAt the
end of the course\, the participants are expected to:\n* Apply biodiversit
y data standards\, specifically Darwin Core and Ecological Metadata Langua
ge. \n* Prepare and structure datasets for publication. \n* Use the IPT fo
r metadata creation and publishing datasets. \n* Manage licensing and ensu
re compliance with GBIF publishing standards and tracking system. \n* nn S
hare and integrate datasets into the GBIF network to boost visibility and
 reuse. \n\n## Prerequisites\n##### Knowledge / competencies\nThis course i
s designed for beginners. There are no specific requirements\, but some no
tions on the structure used by GBIF to organise data (Metadata-only\, Occu
rrences\, Sample events\, Checklists)\, together with basic knowledge on s
tandards\, such as Darwin Core and Ecological Metadata Language\, can be a
n advantage. \nWe recommend the following video tutorials: \n* [Data publ
 ishing concepts](https://youtu.be/b9O0d9ukjSQ)\n* [Introduction to IPT](ht
 tps://youtu.be/gHXsaN_JWeI)\n* [IPT demonstration ](https://youtu.be/eDH9
IoTrMVE)\n\n\n##### Technical\nYou are required to bring your own laptop\,
and it would be an advantage to have your own dataset\, but this is not m
andatory. An access to the [IPT-test](https://www.gbif-test.org/installati
on/f80f7843-b167-432b-94fb-87d7daa5e3fc) used for the course will be provi
ded before. \n\n## Schedule\n* Day 1- AM: Introduction to Biodiversity Dat
a Publishing \n* Day 1- PM: Darwin Core Standards &amp\; Data Preparation
\n* Day 2- AM: Publishing with IPT \n* Day 2- PM: Advanced Topics &amp\; W
 rap-up \n\n## Application\n\nThe registration fees for academics are **200
CHF** and **1000 CHF** for for-profit companies.\n\nWhile participants ar
e registered on a first come\, first served basis\, exceptions may be made
to ensure diversity and equity\, which may increase the time before your
registration is confirmed.\n\nYou will be informed by email of your regist
ration confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participan
ts will be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n
\nApplications close on *07/05/2026*. Deadline for free-of-charge cancella
tion is set to *07/05/2026*. Cancellation after this date will not be reim
bursed. Please note that participation in SIB courses is subject to our [g
 eneral conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditions).\n
\n## Venue and Time\nThis course will take place at Universität Bern.\n\n
\nThe course will start at 9:00 CET and end around 17:00 CET.\n\n\nPrecise
information will be provided to the registered participants in due time.\
n\n\n## Additional information\nCoordination: Valeria Di Cola\, SIB Traini
ng Group.\n\n\nWe will recommend 0.5 ECTS credits for this course (given a
passed exam at the end of the course).\n\n\nYou are welcome to register t
o the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all future courses and wo
rkshops\, as well as all important deadlines using the form [here](https:/

  of Conduct](https://elixir-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participan
ts of SIB courses are also required to abide by the same code.\n\n\nFor mo
