DESCRIPTION:Created specifically for scientists working in a discovery envi
ronment\, this course introduces bioinformatics as a science. The course a
ims to enable scientists to become more confident users of publically avai
lable data resources and analysis tools.\n\nThis course was developed by E
MBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI)\, with input from represe
ntatives of Bayer\, GSK\, Syngenta and Unilever and features tailored deli
very methods and focused case studies.\n\n**Course delivery**\n\nThe major
ity of the course will be delivered online\, using a dedicated section of
EMBL-EBI’s e-learning portal\, Train online.  An initial face to face w
orkshop at the beginning of the course will give trainees an opportunity t
o learn basic skills and concepts in bioinformatics\, whilst also being pr
ovided with more detail on how to best work through the online elements\,
and network with others who will be studying alongside them. \n\nThe majo
rity of the course will be studied at a distance\, by working through a se
ries of online workflows.\n\nCurrently available workflows include:\n\n- B
ioinformatics principles - The bioinformatics principles workflow introdu
ces Bioinformatics as a science and shows you how easy it is to start usin
g bioinformatics tools and resources without needing a computational backg
round.\n\n \n\n- Chemical biology - The chemical biology workflow introd
uces resources which allow you to determine the "druggability" of a protei
n target and to explore potential chemical or small molecular interactions
.\n\n \n\n- Exploring protein targets - This workflow will help you expl
ore the wealth of information available on proteins and their potential as
drug targets.\n\n \n\n- Transcriptomics - This workflow introduces the
field of transcriptomics and discusses the technologies\, processes\, and
challenges involved in running a transcriptomics experiment.\n\n \n\nAll
trainees must complete the "Bioinformatics principles" workflow before mov
ing on to workflows of their choice.  Each workflow has a short final ass
essment which must be passed to unlock the next workflow and only one work
flow can be studied at one time.\n\nSupport mechanisms will be in place vi
a discussion boards\, virtual drop-in sessions and regular webinars throug
hout the module. The course will conclude with a wrap-up workshop in July
2019.\n\nTo complete the course trainees must complete at least three work
flows and participate in the final workshop.
