DESCRIPTION:Objective:\nThe course aims to give a solid basis in basic bioi
 nformatics methods. It covers the theories\, algorithms and practical appl
 ications of computer-based methodology for the analysis of Nucleic and pro
 tein sequences.\n\nOn completion of the course\, the student should be abl
 e to: \n- account for the fundamental concepts within bioinformatics \n- i
 ndependently carry out homology analyses of both protein - and DNA sequenc
 es and interpret the results \n- use the most common commands in Unix/Linu
 x\, \n- independently build a "workbench" for bioinformatics with publicly
  available software suited to the students own needs\, \n- use biological 
 databases \n- independently use technologies and analysis of Next Generati
 on Sequencing data. and \n- manage methods for the analysis of expression 
 data.\n\nContent:\nThe course covers bioinformatics methods such as theori
 es\, algorithms and practical applications in computer-based methodology f
 or the analysis of DNA and protein sequences. The course also covers theor
 ies for the analysis of RNAseq expression data and different analytical me
 thods related to Next Generation Sequencing. \n\nTopics to be covered incl
 udes: biological databases\, homology analyses\, gene analyses (emphasis o
 n software packages like e.g. EMBOSS and UGENE)\, web-based analytical too
 ls\, Unix OS\, comparative genomics\, functional genomics\, GWAS analysis\
 , molecular evolution\, RNAseq expression analysis\, annotation of new gen
 omes. \n\nThe course is based on lectures\, exercises and project work. Ap
 art from the written and the oral examination\, compulsory components occu
 r within e. g. exercises\, project work and laboratory sessions.
