DESCRIPTION:This course is organised by the [Pathogen Data Network (PDN)](h
ttps://pathogendatanetwork.org/)\, which is supported by the National Inst
itute Of Allergy And Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Hea
 lth under Award Number U24AI183840. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free of charge\;
  however\, registration is mandatory.\n\n# Overview\nViralZone is a SIB Sw
iss Institute of Bioinformatics web resource for all viral genera and fami
lies. It provides molecular biology information on all kind of viruses\, a
nd bridges knowledge to virus or sequence databases. For each virus or fam
ily page\, ViralZone provides easy access to the corresponding [UniProtKB/
Swiss-Prot](https://https://www.uniprot.org/) and GenBank viral protein en
tries. It also contains virion and genome images. \n\nArboviruses are viru
ses transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected arthropod
s like mosquitoes\, ticks\, and sandflies. They are a diverse group of vir
uses that can cause various diseases\, such as dengue\, Zika\, chikungunya
\, and West Nile fever. While most arboviruses are not transmitted person-
to-person\, some\, like dengue and yellow fever\, can spread through blood
  transfusions\, organ transplants\, and mother-to-child transmission. \n\n
This 0.5-day course is taught by the developer of ViralZone. In this cours
e\, an introduction to the genomics\, evolution and surveillance of arbovi
ruses based on the information found in ViralZone will be provided. \n\n#
Audience\nThis course is designed for PhD students\, postdoctoral and oth
er researchers in the life sciences from both academia and industry who ar
e interested in virology and public health. \n\n# Learning outcomes\nAt th
e end of the course\, the participants are expected to: \n* Identify the m
ain arboviruses that cause human disease. \n* Find and interpret informa
tion on the genomic features of arboviruses.\n* Explain the evolutionary h
istory and diversity of arboviruses.\n* Describe the methods used to detec
t arboviruses in humans and insect vectors\, including metagenomic approac
 hes.\n \n# Prerequisites\n##### Knowledge / competencies\nThis course i
s designed for beginners. No bioinformatics competencies are required. How
ever\, knowledge of basic molecular biology is required. \n\n##### Technic
al\nYou are required to have your own computer with an Internet connection
. All the suggested resources are available without you having to install
or code anything.\n\n# Application\nThis course is free of charges as it i
s sponsored by PDN\; however you need to apply to attend. Applications wil
l close on **27/02/2026**.\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB course
s is subject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/te
rms-and-conditions).\n\n# Venue and Time\nThis course will be streamed usi
ng Zoom.\n\nIt will start at 14:00 CET (08:00 EST) and end around 18:00 CE
T (12:00 EST). \n\nPrecise information will be provided to registered part
icipants in due course. \n\n\n# Additional information\nCoordination: Moni
que Zahn\, SIB Training group.\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB c
ourses mailing list to be informed of all future courses and workshops\, a
s well as all important deadlines using the form [here](https://lists.sib.
swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB
courses is subject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/train
ing/terms-and-conditions).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](h
 ttps://elixir-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participants of SIB cour
ses are also required to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more information\,
