DESCRIPTION:The environmental impact of computing is an increasingly import
ant and recognised issue: growing demand for digital services\, data stora
ge\, high-performance computing and Artifical Intelligence (AI) brings gre
ater resource use (energy\, water\, metals\, etc.) and associated impacts
such as greenhouse gas emissions.\n\nAlthough public awareness is growing\
, and active work is done by research institutions in implementing sustain
ability into their policy\, at an individual level it can often be difficu
lt to translate this problem into smaller\, practical actions that we can
take in our day-to-day work.\n\nThis series of “byte-sized” training e
vents will offer four tailored sessions focused on practical actions that
participants can implement in their work to monitor\, minimise and report
its environmental impact. \n\n- **Green continuous integration and contin
uous deployment (CI/CD)**\n- **Metrics for monitoring software emissions e
fficiency**\n- **CATS: the Climate Aware Task Scheduler**\n- **nf-co2footp
rint: estimating the carbon footprint of Nextflow pipelines**\n\nAll sessi
ons will run independently\, and consist of an introductory lecture follow
ed by hands-on tutorial. The introductory lecture will be recorded\, and r
epurposed on-demand on the EMBL-EBI Training website.\n\nWe recommend watc
hing the [“The environmental impacts of scientific computing”](https:
 //www.ebi.ac.uk/training/events/environmental-impacts-scientific-computing
/) webinar prior to the event(s)\, as it provides a general introduction t
o sustainable computing and helps placing the sessions into context.\n\nFo
r more details on the programme and how to register\, browse to the “Pro
gramme” and “How to apply” tabs. \n\nThe organisation of this event
is supported by[ Wellcome Trust](https://wellcome.org/)\, the[ Universi
 ty of Cambridge](https://www.cam.ac.uk/)\, [NetDRIVE](https://uknetdrive.
 org/) and the [STEP-UP project](https://step-up.ac.uk/events/bytesized-dr
