DESCRIPTION:This [award winning](https://www.cctl.cam.ac.uk/teaching-prizes
/tel-prize/2020) course is intended to provide a strong foundation in prac
tical statistics and data analysis using the R or Python software environ
ment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a
practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the cours
e focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the life sciences.
\n\nThere are three core goals for this course:\n\n#	Use R or Python confi
dently for statistics and data analysis\n#	Be able to analyse datasets usi
ng standard statistical techniques\n#	Know which tests are and are not app
ropriate\n\n\nR and Python are open source programming languages so all of
the software we will use in the course is free.\n\nIn this course\, we ex
plore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypot
hesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The foc
us of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and de
veloping robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying
statistical theory.\n\nAfter the course you should feel confident to be ab
le to select and implement common statistical techniques using R or Python
and moreover know when\, and when not\, to apply these techniques.\n\n\nI
f you do not have a University of Cambridge [Raven account](https://legacy
.raven.cam.ac.uk/auth/account/) please book or register your interest [her
 e](http://bioinfotraining.bio.cam.ac.uk/booking-form/?event-id=5342706&amp
 \;course-title=Core%20Statistics%20in%20R%20or%20Python%20in-person).\n\nA
dditional information\n\n* Our courses are only free for registered Univer
sity of Cambridge students. All other participants will be charged accordi
 ng to our [charging policy](http://www.training.cam.ac.uk/bioinformatics/
info/charging).\n* Attendance will be taken on all courses and a charge is
applied for non-attendance. After you have booked a place\, if you are un
able to attend any of the live sessions\, please email the [Bioinfo Team](

tails regarding eligibility criteria are available [here](http://www.train
 ing.cam.ac.uk/bioinformatics/info/eligibility).\n* Guidance on visiting Ca
mbridge and finding accommodation is available [here](https://bioinfotrain
