DESCRIPTION:This course will be delivered by the Cray Centre of Excellence 
 and the ARCHER service. It will cover the specfic features of the Cray XC3
 0 over two days. It will introduce new users and those familiar with previ
 ous generations of Cray hardware to the powerful and advanced customisatio
 n features of the Cray hardware and software stack available.\n\nThis cour
 se is specifically focused on hardware and software issues specific to the
  Cray XC30\, and includes a detailed overview of the Intel Xeon processors
 \, the Aries network interconnect and Cray provided systems software and p
 erformance tools. It is ideal for both users upgrading from\, and therefor
 e familiar with\, existing Cray supercomputers or those porting form alter
 native platforms. The programme will include:\n\nDetailed introduction int
 o the new Cray XC30 hardware architecture.\n\nDeep diving in use of the In
 tel Xeon processors.\n\nFull explanation of thread binding mechanism cover
 ing use of "Hyperthread" technology.\n\nIntroduction to the Cray Compilati
 on Environment and Intel Composer compilers.\n\nAdvice on how to select co
 rrect compilation options for individual application requirements.\n\nDemo
 nstrations of the additional flexibility and functionality available with 
 the Cray MPI library.\n\nMethods for customising the placement of ranks an
 d processes to improve individual application communication performance.\n
 \nMechanisms for improving the overlap between communication and computati
 on within an application.\n\nUsing and optimising MPI-IO for efficient fil
 e system performance.\nGuidance on use of Cray supplied optimisations of t
 he standard installed scientific libraries.\n\nTutorials on the built in p
 erformance analysis tools\, CrayPAT\, and the code restructuring tool\, Re
 veal.\n\nAttendees would benefit from experience with or an interest in Cr
 ay supercomputers and an understanding of modern HPC languages and techniq
 ues (i.e. C\, Fortran\, C++ and/or MPI\, PGAS and/or SHMEM). There will al
 so be many opportunities for attendees to discuss their applications with 
 the Cray Centre of Excellence so the organisers encourage attendees to mak
 e their own applications available for testing during practical sessions.\
