DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nScientific results are mostly conveyed through grap
hics and tables\, and representing data graphically in a clear way is an i
mportant task for any scientist. \n\nCreating such graphs is not a trivial
task though and choosing the right representation depends on many factors
: among the most important the data itself\, the message that the research
er wants to get across\, and the way in which the data is presented (a fig
ure in an article is completely different from a figure in slides). \n\nDu
ring this course\, we will present different ways for representing data\,
how to choose among them\, why you should avoid using error bars\, how to
design efficient graphs\, which tools to use (and which tools to avoid !)\
, how to design graphs for specific media\, good practices for plotting da
ta\, and common mistakes to avoid. \n\nThis course will also include pract
icals using the R statistical software\; during these practicals\, we will
discuss and introduce the different models for creating graphics in R (in
cluding base R and ggplot2). \n# Audience\nThis course is addressed to sci
entists who need to produce data visualisation and who have already used t
he R software before. \n# Learning outcomes\nAt the end of the course\, th
e participants are expected to: \n\n* apply data visualisation methods to
represent their data and get their message across \n\n* choose the right m
ethod to represent a dataset graphically \n\n* use the R software (base R
and ggplot2) to produce data visualisations \n\n# Prerequisites\n##### Kno
wledge / competencies\nThis course is designed for beginners in R\, for in
stance those who have attended any of the SIB courses on [First Steps in R
 ](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/20221010_FSWIR). \n\n\n##### Techn
ical\nYou are required to bring your own laptop with a wifi connection\, a
nd the following software installed PRIOR to the course: R\, R Studio. A l
ist of packages will be provided in due time. \n# Application\nRegistratio
n fees are **120 CHF** for academics and **600 CHF** for for-profit compan
ies. While participants are registered on a first come\, first served basi
s\, exceptions may be made to ensure diversity and equity\, which may incr
ease the time before your registration is confirmed.\n\nYou will be inform
ed by email of your registration confirmation. Upon reception of the confi
rmation email\, participants will be asked to confirm attendance by paying
the fees within 5 days.\n\nApplications close on *06/03/2023* or as soon
as the course is full. Deadline for free-of-charge cancellation is set to
**06/03/2023**. Cancellation after this date will not be reimbursed. Pleas
e note that participation to SIB courses is subject to our [general condit
 ions](http://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditions).\n\n# Venue and
Time\nThe course will take palce at the University of Lausanne (Metro M1 l
ine\, Sorge station). \n\nThe course will start at 9:00 and end around 17:
 00. Precise information will be provided to the participants in due time.\
n\nMore information will be provided to the registered participants in due
  time. \n\n# Additional information\nCoordination: Patricia Palagi\n\nWe
will recommend 0.5 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exam at th
e end of the course).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB courses ma
iling list to be informed of all future courses and workshops\, as well as
all important deadlines using the form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mai
lman/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB courses i
s subject to our [general conditions](http://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-
and-conditions).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](https://eli
xir-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participants of SIB courses are al
so required to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more information\, please co
