DESCRIPTION:The registration to this course is now open. Please\, bring yo
ur own laptop. All the PATC courses at BSC are free of charge.\n\nCourse c
onveners: Marc Guevara\, Carles Tena and Maria Teresa Pay Perez\n\nThis t
raining will be online via zoom.\n\nCourse lecturers: Earth Sciences Depa
rtment researchers involved in the group of Computational Earth Sciences\,
Atmospheric Composition\, Climate Prediction and Earth System Services. F
inal lectures TBA.\n\nObjectives: The objective of this PATC course is to
cover the basics of a high performance computing (HPC) environment oriente
d towards earth science applications\, specifically chemical weather model
ling and climate modelling.\n\nMore precisely\, the course will cover:\n\n
\n	Introduction to earth science fundamentals and modelling\;\n	Basic usag
 e of an HPC environment: shell\, compilers\, libraries\, file systems\, qu
euing system and parallel computing\;\n	Build and configure targeted earth
science applications with the NMMB/BSC-CTM chemical transport model and w
ith the EC-EARTH climate model\;\n	Execute and monitor numerical experimen
ts using a workflow manager\;\n	Analyse and visualise model outputs with a
wide set of tools.\n\n\nLearning outcomes: Participants will learn and ga
in experience in accessing an HPC facility\, installing earth science nume
rical models and related utilities and libraries\, running numerical simul
ations\, monitoring the execution of supercomputing jobs\, analysing and v
isualising model results.\n\nLevel: (All courses are designed for speciali
sts with at least 1st cycle degree or similar background experience)\nFor
trainees with some theoretical and practical knowledge\n\nPrerequisites: \
nAt least University degree in progress on Earth Sciences\, Computer Scien
 ces or related area\nBasic knowledge of UNIX\nKnowledge of C\, FORTRAN\, M
PI or openMP is recommended\nKnowledge of Earth Sciences data formats is r
 ecommended (grib\, netcdf\, hdf\,…)\n\nKnowledge of R and Python\n\nAgen
