DESCRIPTION:The registration to this course is now open. Please\, bring yo
ur own laptop. All the PATC courses at BSC are free of charge.\n\nCourse c
onveners: Maria Teresa Pay and Mario Acosta\n\nCourse lecturers: Earth Sc
iences Department researchers involved in the group of Computational Earth
Sciences\, Atmospheric Composition\, Climate Prediction and Earth System
Services. Final lectures TBA.\n\nObjectives: The objective of this PATC co
urse is to cover the basics of a high performance computing (HPC) environm
ent oriented towards earth science applications\, specifically chemical we
ather modelling and climate modelling.\n\nMore precisely\, the course will
cover:\n\nIntroduction to earth science fundamentals and modelling\;\n	Ba
sic usage of an HPC environment: shell\, compilers\, libraries\, file syst
ems\, queuing system and parallel computing\;\n	Build and configure target
ed earth science applications with the NMMB/BSC-CTM chemical transport mod
el and with the EC-EARTH climate model\;\n	Execute and monitor numerical e
xperiments using a workflow manager\;\n	Analyse and visualise model output
s with a wide set of tools.\nLearning outcomes: Participants will learn an
d gain experience in accessing an HPC facility\, installing earth science
numerical models and related utilities and libraries\, running numerical s
imulations\, monitoring the execution of supercomputing jobs\, analysing a
nd visualising model results.\n\nLevel: (All courses are designed for spec
ialists with at least 1st cycle degree or similar background experience)\n
For trainees with some theoretical and practical knowledge\n\nPrerequisite
s: \nAt least University degree in progress on Earth Sciences\, Computer S
ciences or related area\nBasic knowledge of UNIX\nKnowledge of C\, FORTRAN
\, MPI or openMP is recommended\nKnowledge of Earth Sciences data formats
 is recommended (grib\, netcdf\, hdf\,…)\n\nKnowledge of R and Python\n\n
