DESCRIPTION:The registration to this course is now open. Please\, bring yo
ur own laptop. All the PATC courses at BSC are free of charge.\n\nCourse c
onveners: Francesco Benicasa\, Enza Di Tomaso\n\nCourse lecturers: France
 sco Benincasa\, Miguel Castrillo\, Neven Fučkar\, Oriol Jorba Casellas\,
Joan López de la Franca\, Domingo Manubens\, Nicolau Manubens\, Kim Serra
dell Maronda\, Oriol Tinto\n\nObjectives: The objective of this PATC cours
e is to cover the basics of a high performance computing (HPC) environment
oriented towards earth science applications\, specifically chemical weath
er modelling and climate modelling.\n\nMore precisely\, the course will co
ver:\n\nIntroduction to earth science fundamentals and modelling\;\n	Basic
usage of an HPC environment: shell\, compilers\, libraries\, file systems
\, queuing system\;\n	Build and configure targeted earth science applicati
ons with the NMMB/BSC-CTM chemical transport model and with the EC-EARTH c
limate model\;\n	Execute and monitor numerical experiments using a workflo
w manager\;\n	Analyse and visualise model outputs with a wide set of tools
.\nLearning outcomes: Participants will learn and gain experience in acces
sing an HPC facility\, installing earth science numerical models and relat
ed utilities and libraries\, running numerical simulations\, monitoring th
e execution of supercomputing jobs\, analysing and visualising model resul
ts.\n\nLevel: (All courses are designed for specialists with at least 1st
cycle degree or similar background experience)\nFor trainees with some the
oretical and practical knowledge\n\nPrerequisites: \nAt least University d
egree in progress on Earth Sciences\, Computer Sciences or related area\nB
asic knowledge of UNIX\nKnowledge of C\, FORTRAN\, MPI or openMP is recomm
ended\nKnowledge of Earth Sciences data formats is recommended (grib\, net
