DESCRIPTION:\n\n   IMPORTANT DATES for this Course   Deadline for app
 lications: May 1st 2017   Course date: May 8th - May 12th 2017\n\nCan
didates with adequate profile will be accepted in the next 72 hours after
the application until we reach 20 participants.\n\n\nOverview\n\nThis is a
n entry level course aimed that those with a reasonable biological backgro
und butno significant experience with bioinformatics. The course is broadl
y based around a series\nof exercises in which a combination of simple ana
lytical tools and reference to publicly available\ndatabases is applied to
the investigation of a single human gene. The training manual for the co
urse\nis comprised of detailed instructions for the tasks undertaken. Incl
uded are\, questions (with answers)\nand discussion of and the interpretat
ion of the results achieved.\n\nParticipants are asked to imagine an inter
est in the disease aniridia. Course exercises then\nprovide extremely deta
iled instruction leading participants to discover the gene primarily\nasso
ciated with this disease and all that is interesting about that gene and i
ts protein products.\n\n\nThis course will also provide a soft introductio
n to Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis.\nThis part of the cou
rse aims at providing basic skills that are needed when one needs to proce
ss NGS\ndata\, such as evaluating data quality\, trimming sequences\, chan
ging data formats\, visualising data\, etc.\nThen\, participants will lear
n how to address a simple transcriptomics problem\, stepwise\, using open
source bioinformatics\ntools.\n\nObjectives\n\nThe operation of the variou
s programs used in the exercises will be explained\, but only to the\nexte
nt that allows a user to select parameters intelligently and to interpret
results.\n\nThe course will provide participants with an awareness of a wi
de range of bioinformatics tools\nand sufficient experience to use those t
ools in basic investigations with a relatively high degree\nof user indepe
ndence.\n\n\nIn the training course design\, this is intentionally built-i
n\, to allow us to show a wide range of\nanalytical techniques while provi
ding enough experience to break the ice in all of them.\n\n\n\nTarget Audi
ence\n\nThis course is intended for those wishing to investigate how they
might begin to exploit the ever\nexpanding abundance of computing and data
resources for researchers seeking help in using them.\n\n\n\nCourse Pre-r
equisites\n\nBasic understanding of molecular biology. No particular compu
 ting expertise will be assumed.\n\n\n
