DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nExperiments designed to quantify gene expression of
ten yield hundreds of genes that exhibit statistically significant differe
nces between groups of interest. After identifying differentially expresse
d genes\, enrichment analysis (EA) methods can be used to explore the biol
ogical functions associated with them. These methods allow us to identify
groups of genes (e.g.\, grouped into pathways) that are overrepresented\,
thereby offering insights into biological mechanisms. Gene Set Enrichment
Analysis (GSEA) is one of the EA methods frequently used for high-throughp
ut gene expression data analysis. This course will cover GSEA and alternat
ive enrichment methods. Because GSEA implementation is directly linked to
databases that annotate gene function in cells\, the course will also prov
ide an overview of functional annotation databases\, such as Gene Ontology
. All course materials are available on the [GitHub course web page](https
 ://sib-swiss.github.io/enrichment-analysis-training/).\n\n\n# Audience\nBi
ologists who are eager to perform functional annotation of a set of differ
entially expressed genes.\n\n# Learning outcomes\nAt the end of the course
\, participants will be able to:\n* Distinguish available enrichment analy
sis method\n* Apply overrepresentation and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis me
thods using R\n* Determine whether the genes of a Gene Ontology term have
a statistically significant difference in expression or not\n* Learn where
to find other gene sets in databases (e.g. KEGG\, oncogenic gene sets) an
 d use them in R\n\n# Prerequisites\n***Knowledge / Competencies***\n\nYou
should meet the learning outcomes of either [First Steps with R in Life Sc
 iences](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/20250203_FSWR) or [Introduct
 ion to Statistics with R](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/20250127_S
TATR).\n\nIn case of doubt\, evaluate your R skills with this [quiz](https

This course will be streamed. You are thus required to have an internet co
nnection and your own computer with the latest [R](https://www.r-project.o
 rg/) and [RStudio](https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/) ver
 sions installed.\n\n# Application\n\n\nRegistration fees are **100 CHF** f
or academics and **500 CHF** for for-profit companies. \n\nWhile participa
nts are registered on a first come\, first served basis\, exceptions may b
e made to ensure diversity and equity\, which may increase the time before
your registration is confirmed.\n\nApplications will close on **12/11/202
6** or as soon as the places will be filled up. Deadline for free-of-charg
e cancellation is set to **12/11/2026**. Cancellation after this date will
not be reimbursed.\n\nYou will be informed by email of your registration
confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants will
be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\n # Ve
nue and Time\nThis course will be streamed. \n\nThe course will start at
9:00 CET and end around 17:00 CET.\n\nPrecise information will be provided
to the participants in due time.\n\n# Additional information\nCoordinati
on: Diana Marek\, SIB Training Group.\n\nWe will recommend 0.25 ECTS credi
ts for this course (given a passed exam at the end of the course).\n\nYou
are welcome to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of
all future courses and workshops\, as well as all important deadlines usin
 g the form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/postorius/lists/courses.lists.si
