DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nR is a complete\, flexible and open source system f
or statistical analysis and graphics\, which has become a tool of choice f
or biologists and biomedical scientists who need to analyse and visualise
large amounts of data. Due to its popularity\, R is continuously updated a
nd extended with the latest libraries for data manipulation\, modelling an
d visualisation. \n\nThis course will give an introduction to R and Rstudi
o (an integrated development environment for R) in an interactive manner.
Participants will receive example data sets to practise data manipulation\
, graphical exploration and statistical hypothesis testing.\n\n# Audience\
nThis "First Steps with R" two-day course is addressed to beginners wantin
g to become familiar with the R syntax\, environment\, and the most common
commands to start using R to explore and interpret their data.\n\n# Learn
ing objectives\nAt the end of the course\, participants should be comforta
ble with the R environment and be able to read\, understand and write R co
mmands\, allowing them to implement and interpret a workflow for their dat
 a analysis:\n* interact with the R environment\n* import data\, explore it
and summarise it\n* explore data with graphs\n* perform simple statistica
 l tests\n\n\n# Prerequisites\n#### ***Knowledge / competencies***\nAs it i
s a course for beginners\, no background in R or any programming language
is required. However\, you are encouraged to go through some of the R docu
 mentation available [here](http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/r-release
/R-intro.html).\n\nPlease also note this course is NOT a training on stati
stics but rather a training on how to use R to perform different tasks\, s
tatistics being one of them.\n#### ***Technical***\nA Wi-Fi enabled laptop
  with latest [R](https://www.r-project.org/) and [RStudio](https://www.rst
 udio.com/products/rstudio/download/#download) versions installed. There wi
ll be access to the eduroam and guest network. \n\n# Application\n\n\n \n\
nRegistration fees are **200 CHF** for academics and **1000 CHF** for for-
profit companies. While participants are registered on a first come\, firs
t served basis\, exceptions may be made to ensure diversity and equity\, w

ill be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\n\n
  # Venue and time\nThe course will take place in at the University of Zur

recise information will be provided to the participants on due time.\n\n#
  Additional information\nCoordination: Monique Zahn\, SIB Training Group.\
n\nWe will recommend 0.5 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exam
at the end of the course).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB cour
ses mailing list to be informed of all future courses and workshops\, as w
ell as all important deadlines using the form [here](http://lists.sib.swis
s/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct]

urses are also required to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more information
