DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nWith a constant evolution of technologies\, life sc
ientists (such as laboratory **biologists**) are faced with an increasing
need for **bioinformatics skills** to deal with high-throughput data stora
ge\, retrieval and analysis.\n\nAlthough several resources developed for s
uch tasks have a web interface (most of the time\, the first choice of bio
logists)\, many operations can be more efficiently handled with command-li
ne programs and utilities.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is addressed to **be
ginners** wanting to become familiar with the UNIX environment and master
the most common commands\, which could be useful to run software dedicated
  to **high-throughput data management**.\n\n# Learning objectives\nAt the
end of the course you should:\n* be able to execute most basic UNIX comman
ds\n* be able to build complex and combined commands using various paramet
ers\n* be sufficiently skilled for further courses requiring basics of UNI
 X\, like HPC or NGS courses\n\n\n# Prerequisites\n***Knowledge / competenc
ies***\nAs it is a course for beginners\, no background in UNIX or any pro
gramming language is required.\n***Technical***\nA laptop with a command l
ine **terminal installed**. The alternative for Windows users is to downlo
ad a virtual machine image and thus at least 10 Go free on hard disk and 4
Go of RAM are required.\n\n# Application\n\nRegistration fees are **100 C
HF** for academics and **500 CHF** for for-profit companies.\n\nWhile part
icipants are registered on a first come\, first serve basis\, exceptions m
ay be made to ensure diversity and equity.\n\nApplications will close as s
oon as the places will be filled up.Deadline for registration and free-of-
charge cancellation is set to **05/01/2024**. Cancellation after this date
will not be reimbursed. Please note that participation to SIB courses is
 subject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-a
nd-conditions).\n\nYou will be informed by email of your registration conf
irmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants will be
asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\n # Venue
and time\nThe course will be streamed.\n\nIt will start at 9:00 CET and en

 re the course.\n\n# Additional information\nCoordination: Diana Marek - S
IB Training Group\n\nWe will recommend 0.25 ECTS credits for this course (
given a passed exam at the end of the course).\n\nYou are welcome to regis
ter to the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all future courses a
nd workshops\, as well as all important deadlines using the form [here](ht
 tps://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELI

rticipants of SIB courses are also required to abide by the same code.\n\n
