DESCRIPTION:When dealing with performance problems of programs involving a
large amount of numerical operations\, an HPC programmer has to know the e
xistence of specifically developed numerical libraries\, and how to use th
em. Their high scalability and portability can be of great help\, since th
ey can save a good amount of computing time and memory\, and avoid the eff
ort of having to think and implement functions already covered by one of s
uch libraries.\nIn this course\, some of the most important numerical libr
aries for HPC will be presented: in particular\, libraries for Linear Alge
bra (ScaLAPACK and others)\, Fast Fourier Transform (FFTW and others) will
be covered in depth and an overview to modelling with Partial Differentia
l Equations (PETSc) will be presented. Moreover an introduction to the Ada
ptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) method and its implementation will be covered.
Time for practice is also scheduled.\n\nTarget Audience: \nStudents and
researchers interested in improving the performance of their programs\, by
exploiting the functionality of the best suited numerical libraries for t
 heir code.\n\nTopics: \nIntroduction to HPC Numerical libraries.\nOvervie
w on Fast-Fourier Transforms theory\, Parallel Data Distribution (Slab and
2D decompisition). Introduction on FFTW and 2DECOMP&amp\;FFT libraries.\n
Overview on (dense and sparse) Linear Algebra Libraries. Overview on numer
ical libraries for accelerators.\nIntroduction on BLACS and ScaLAPACK libr
aries. Overview on PETSc.\nIntroduction to AMR: Numerical Methods and Tool
 s.\n\nPrerequisites: \nKnowledge of a scientific programming language (C/
C++\, Fortran)\, basic notions of parallel programming (MPI and openMP).\n
\nGrant\nThe lunch for the three days will be offered to all the participa
nts and some grants are available. The only requirement to be eligible is
to be not funded by your institution to attend the course and to work or l
ive in an institute outside the Bologna area. The grant  will be 300 euro
s for students working outside Italy and 150 euros for students working in
Italy. Some documentation will be required and the grant will be paid onl
y after a certified presence of minimum 80% of the lectures.\n\nFurther in
formation about how to request the grant\, at the confirmation of the Work
shop: about 3 weeks before the starting date.\n\nhttps://events.prace-ri.e
