DESCRIPTION:**The course is now full with a long waiting list. But you can
still attend the series of long talks on 24 May - free of charge\, but reg
istration is mandatory [please use this form](https://forms.office.com/Pag
 es/ResponsePage.aspx?id=KewaGuOxtEGL2iiKlpme_21YWKjkPbBBkP2NRGPf7v5URjA1Ql
 BONk8wWU82VFdRSUY3UUkzVVhYVy4u)**. **\n# Overview\nData analysis is funda
mental for arriving at scientific conclusions and testing different model
hypotheses. Key to this is understanding uncertainty in our results\, and
Bayesian statistics offers a framework to quantify and assess the variabil
ity in our inference from data. This 3-day course will introduce participa
nts to the core concepts of Bayesian statistics through lectures and appli
ed examples. The first two days of the course will be dedicated to lecture
s and practical exercises. The practical exercises will be implemented in
the widely used R programming language and the Rstan library. They will en
able participants to use standard Bayesian statistical tools and interpret
their results. \n\nThe third day will host a series of talks by experts f
rom SIB groups\, who will present state-of-the-art Bayesian methods and th
eir application in the life sciences. \n\n# Schedule \n## Day 1 - in perso
n\, in Basel\n9:00 – 17:00: **Jack Kuipers** (ETH Zurich and SIB) and **
Wandrille Duchemin** (University of Basel and SIB) \n* T-test recap\n* P-v
alues and confidence intervals\n* Monte Carlo methods\n* Bayesian first st
 eps\n\n\n## Day 2 - in person\, in Basel\n9:00 – 17:00: **Jack Kuipers**
(ETH Zurich and SIB) and **Wandrille Duchemin** (University of Basel and
 SIB) \n* Bayesian t-tests (STAN + BRMS)\n* Priors\n* Bayesian linear regre
 ssion\n* Bayesian logistic regression\n \n\n## Day 3 - Long talks and demo
 s - online \n\n* 9:00 – Bayesian foundations of Phylogenetic and Phylody
 namic inference – **Timothy Vaughan** (BSSE-ETHZ and SIB) \n * 10:30
 - coffee break \n* 11:00 - Informative Bayesian priors boost power in geno
me-wide association studies - **Zoltan Kutalik** (University of Lausanne a
 nd SIB) \n * 12:30 Lunch break \n* 13:30 - Bayesian approaches in compu
tational biology - **Simone Tiberi** (University of Bologna and SIB) \n
   * 15:00- coffee break \n* 15:30 – Bayesian neural networks – **Danie
le Silvestro** (University of Fribourg and SIB) \n * 17:00 Close \n\n#
Audience\nThis course is intended for life scientists familiar with statis
tical inference and who would like to add the Bayesian perspective to enri
ch their research. \n\n# Learning outcomes\nAt the end of the course\, pa
rticipants should be able to: \n* Recognise the core components of a Bayes
ian model \n* List the main concepts of methods for Bayesian inference \n*
Implement a simple Bayesian model in R \n* Interpret the results of a Bay
 esian model \n\n# Prerequisites\n##### Knowledge / competencies\n**Being a
t ease with R is absolutely required for this course** (at least equivalen
t to the [First steps with R](https://github.com/sib-swiss/first-steps-wit
h-R-training) SIB course). Basic knowledge of statistical inference (for i
nstance\, equivalent to the [Introduction to statistics](https://www.sib.s
wiss/training/course/20220207_STATR) SIB course) is also required. \n \nBo
th pre-requisites are also taught by the ETHZurich course [introduction to
  statistics and R](http://www.vvz.ethz.ch/Vorlesungsverzeichnis/lerneinhei
 t.view?semkez=2022W&amp\;ansicht=KATALOGDATEN&amp\;lerneinheitId=163598&am
p\;lang=en) \n\n##### Technical\nYou are required to bring your own laptop
and make sure that the following software is installed PRIOR to the cours
 e: \n* A recent verion of [R](https://www.r-project.org/) and [RStudio](h
ttps://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/) (the free version is mo
re than enough).\n\nAdditionally\, make sure to have the following R libra
 ries installed: \n* The [Rstan](https://github.com/stan-dev/rstan/wiki/RSt
an-Getting-Started) package (warning\, there are 2 steps to the installati
on: Configuring C++ toolchains\, and then installation of Rstan) \n* [Rmar
 kdown](https://rmarkdown.rstudio.com/lesson-1.html) \n* [Shiny](https://sh
 iny.rstudio.com/tutorial/written-tutorial/lesson1/) \n* [tidyverse](https:
 //www.tidyverse.org/packages/) \n* [BRMS](https://cran.r-project.org/web/p
 ackages/brms/index.html) \n\n\n# Application\nThe registration fees for th
 e 3 full-days for academics are **200 CHF** and **1000 CHF** for for-profi
t companies. **Day 3 (long talks) is free of charge\, but registration is
mandatory - in this case\, [please use this form](https://forms.office.com

ed on a first come\, first served basis\, exceptions may be made to ensure
diversity and equity\, which may increase the time before your registrati
on is confirmed.\n\nYou will be informed by email of your registration con
firmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants will be
asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\nApplicat
ions close on **01/05/2023** or as soon as the course is full. Deadline fo
r free-of-charge cancellation is set to **08/05/2023**. Cancellation after
this date will not be reimbursed. Please note that participation in SIB c
ourses is subject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/traini
ng/terms-and-conditions).\n\n# Venue and Time\nThis course will be in pers
on only in the Kollegienhauss building of the University of Basel (address
: Petersgraben 50\, 4051 Basel) on Days 1 and 2\, and online only on Day 3
.\n\nThe course will start at 9:00 and end around 17:00. \n\nMore informat
ion will be provided to the registered participants one week before the co
 urse starts. \n\n# Additional information\nCoordination: Patricia Palagi\
n\nWe will recommend 0.75 ECTS credits for this course (given that a succe
ssful evaluation is achieved at the end of the course).\n\nYou are welcome
to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all future
courses and workshops\, as well as all important deadlines using the form
 [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease note t
hat participation in SIB courses is subject to our [general conditions](ht
