DESCRIPTION:**This course will be streamed only for registered participants
.**\n\n# Overview\n\nThe word glycoprotein is often used yet the “glyco
” part is hardly ever described. This is the case\, for instance\, with
viruses in which surface spike proteins are abbreviated GP\, numbered HIV
GP120\, but remain depicted as a smooth fist-like structure. In reality\,
glycan molecules decorate a broad variety of surface or secreted proteins
and the literature is filled with unnoticed references focusing on the “
glyco” part.\n\nThis course is an opportunity to update and extend your
knowledge of glycoproteins through the use of bioinformatics resources col
lectively called “glycoinformatics”. We will provide an overview of th
e challenging questions raised by the study of glycans as non-template dri
ven molecules and the solutions that are currently proposed to store\, sea
rch\, analyse and visualise the effect(s) of protein glycosylation on prot
ein structure\, function(s) and interactions. We will make use of several
glycomics resources on [Expasy](https://www.expasy.org/)\, the Swiss Bioin
formatics Portal.\n\n# Audience\n\nThis course is targeting any life scien
tist\, from academia or industry: biologists\, biochemists\, from master s
tudents to advanced researchers.\n\n# Learning objectives\n\nAt the end of
the course\, participants will be able to:\n* list examples illustrating
the importance of glycosylation \n* check for known glycans when dealing w
 ith glycoproteins\n* use the [GlyConnect](https://glyconnect.expasy.org/)
resource to investigate the potential for structural or functional changes
\n* use the [UniLectin](https://www.unilectin.eu/) platform to evaluate gl
ycan binding potential\n* make educated guesses as to the feasibility of g
 lycoprotein-protein interactions\n\n# Prerequisites\n#### Knowledge / comp
etencies\n\nThis course is designed for beginners in glycoinformatics or g
lycomics. Experience in using [UniProt](https://www.uniprot.org/) is requi
red. \n\n#### Technical\n\nThis course will be **streamed**\, you are thus
required to have your own computer with an internet connection.\n\n# Appl
ication\n\n\n\nRegistration fees are **120 CHF** for academics and **600 C
HF** for for-profit companies. This includes course content material.\n\nD
eadline for registration and free-of-charge cancellation is set is set to
**May 11\, 2021**. Cancellation after this date will not be reimbursed. Pl
ease note that participation to SIB courses is subject to our [general con
 ditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditions).\n\nYou will
be informed by email of your registration confirmation.\n\nIf you are int
erested in attending the lectures only\, apply for free [here](https://www
 .sib.swiss/training/course/20210525_GLYCL).\n\n# Venue and Time\n\nThe cou
rse will start every day at 9:00 CET and end around 17:00 CET using Zoom.
Precise information will be provided to the participants before the course
