DESCRIPTION:The introduction to Jalview course is aimed at PhD students and
post-doctoral researchers who have little or no experience with the creat
ion and analysis of multiple sequence alignments and their exploration in
the context of predicted and observed 3D structures. It's also a great opp
ortunity for more experienced users to refresh their knowledge and learn a
bout the latest features in Jalview 2.11.3.\n\nThis course takes place ove
r two afternoons on **4th and 5th October 2023** at the University of Dund
ee School of Life Sciences' Small Lecture Theatre\, held in partnership wi
 th the [School's PhD program](https://www.dundee.ac.uk/life-sciences/phds)
. The course is free of charge\, but since spaces are limited\, priority w
ill be given to new PhD students affiliated with the University of Dundee
and other Scottish universities. \n\nEach of the two sessions consists of
a brief introduction followed by a series of short talks and sessions base
 d on [Jalview's hands-on exercises](/tutorial/exercises/). On Wednesday\,
we will cover Jalview's core capabilities: creation\, editing\, analysis a
nd visualisation of alignments linked with phylogenetic trees\, and Thursd
ay will focus on using Jalview's web services for protein secondary struct
ure and disorder prediction\, and visualising 3D structures from EMBL-EBI
 and AlphaFoldDB.\n\n**Date and Time:** 1pm - 5pm on 4th and 5th of October
\, 2023\n\n**Who should attend:** Research students and academics working
on biomolecular sequence structure and function. \n\n**What you need to br
ing:** This is a hands-on introductory course. You will need a laptop and
the ability to connect to EduRoam in order to access Jalview\, its web ser
vices\, and the course materials.\n\n\n\n**Instructor:** James Procter (Ja
lview Coordinator\, Division of Computational Biology)\n\n**Before you com
e:** You can save time during the workshop by downloading and installing J
alview on your laptop. We also recommend you familiarise yourself with Jal
view by watching the following videos:\n\n* [Navigating the Jalview interf
ace](https://youtu.be/QwsFVQx3W8I)\n* [Loading sequences and alignments in
to Jalview](https://youtu.be/Ndq9XuoDBto)\n* [Saving sequence alignments a
nd projects in Jalview](https://youtu.be/xT4gKV6F_Vk)\n* [Jalview's contex
 t menus](https://youtu.be/NN-EFVn8euk)\n\n**Relevant papers:** The first s
ession is focused on Jalview’s core workflow for creating multiple seque
nce alignments\, analysing them and producing high-quality figures for pub
lication. This was described in [Procter et al. 2021](https://link.springe
 r.com/protocol/10.1007/978-1-0716-1036-7_13)). For background on Jalview's
capabilities\, we also recommend reading the [original Jalview 2 paper](h
 ttps://academic.oup.com/bioinformatics/article/25/9/1189/203460).
