 ourse is aimed at users and developers who know how to program\,\nbut have
  little or no experience in Fortran\, and those who may wish to\nhave a re
 fresher in Fortran.\n\nOutline\n\nFortran (a contraction of Formula Transl
 ation) was the first programming\nlangauge to have a standard (in 1954)\, 
 but has changed significantly over\nthe years. More recent standards (the 
 latest being Fortran 2018) come\nunder the umbrella term "Modern Fortran".
  Fortran retains very great\nsignificance in many areas of scientific and 
 numerical computing\,\nparticularly for applications such as quantum chemi
 stry\, plasmas\, and in\nnumerical weather prediction and climate models.\
 n\nThis course provides an introduction to the basics of writing Fortran.\
 nIt will cover basic syntax\, variables\, expressions and assignments\,\nf
 low of control\, and introductions to i/o and user-defined types.\nCommon 
 Fortran idioms are introduced and contrasted with those\navailable in C-li
 ke languages\; the course will try to focus on\nreal usage rather than for
 mal descriptions.\n\nAt the end of the course you should be able to unders
 tand many Fortran\nprograms and be confident to start to write well-struct
 ured and portable\nFortran. Fortran is a rather "large" language\, so it i
 s not possible to\ncover all its features in a two day course. Further ele
 ments of Fortran\nare discussed in the "Intermediate Modern Fortran" cours
 e.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nAttendees must be familiar which the basic concept
 s of\nprogramming: variables\, logic\, flow of control\, loops\, functions
  and\nso on. No knowledge of Fortran is assumed. Previous programming\nexp
 erience might typically be in the context C/C++ or python.\nIf you know no
  programming\, we suggest this course on Fortran is not\nthe place to star
 t.\n\nRequirements:\n\nThe course requires a Fortran compiler\, for which 
 a local machine or\nlaptop may be appropriate [1]. If you do not have acce
 ss to a Fortran\ncompiler\, course training accounts on ARCHER2 will be av
 ailable which\nprovide access to various compilers. Use of a text editor w
 ill be\nrequired (some may prefer an IDE\, but we do not intend to conside
 r or\nsupport IDEs).\n\n\n[1] This may typically be gfortran\, freely avai
