DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nHigh-throughput sequencing (HTS) methods have had a
large impact on many biological fields due to a very rapid decrease in co
st and throughput. It often results in hundreds of gigabytes of data. This
can make the downstream analysis challenging and requires bioinformatics
skills.\n\nIn this module\, we will introduce the most used sequencing tec
hnologies and explain their concepts. Using different datasets\, we will p
ractice quality control\, alignment of reads to a reference genome and vis
ualize the output.\n\nThe course materials can be found in the dedicated [
 GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-introduction-training/latest/) pag
e.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is intended for life scientists who are alre
ady dealing with HTS data and would like to be able to start analysing the
m.\n\n# Learning Outcomes\nAt the end of the course participants should be
able to:\n* understand the basics of the different HTS technologies\n* pe
rform quality control for better downstream analysis \n* align reads to a
reference genome \n* visualize the output.\n\n# Prerequisites\n##### *Know
ledge / competencies*\nYou should meet the learning outcomes of: [First St
eps with UNIX in Life Sciences](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/2024
 0912_FSWU)\nor the e-learning course [UNIX Fundamentals](https://www.sib.s
wiss/training/course/2012_UNIXF).\n\nIn case of doubt\, evaluate your Unix
skills with this quiz.\n\n##### *Technical*\nSoftware requirements will
be communicated before the course.\n\n# Application\n\n\nRegistration fees
for academics are **300 CHF** and **1500 CHF** for for-profit companies.
While participants are registered on a first come\, first served basis\, e
xceptions may be made to ensure diversity and equity\, which may increase
the time before your registration is confirmed.\n\nApplications will close
as soon as the places will be filled up. Deadline for free-of-charge canc
ellation is set to **15/04/2025**. Cancellation after this date will not b
e reimbursed. \n\nYou will be informed by email of your registration confi
rmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants will be a
sked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\n# Venue an
d Time\nThis course will be streamed.\n\nThis course will start at 9:00 an
d end around 17:00.\n\nPrecise information will be provided to the partici
pants on due time.\n\n\n# Additional information\n\nCoordination: Grégoir
e Rossier\, SIB Training group.\n\nWe will recommend 0.75 ECTS credits for
this course (given a passed exam at the end of the course).\n\nYou are we
lcome to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all fu
ture courses and workshops\, as well as all important deadlines using the
 form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease n
ote that participation in SIB courses is subject to our [general condition
 s](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditions).\n\nSIB abides by
 the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](https://elixir-europe.org/events/code-of-cond
uct). Participants of SIB courses are also required to abide by the same c
 ode.\n\nFor more information\, please contact [training@sib.swiss](mailto:
