DESCRIPTION:**This course is now full with a waiting list.**\n\n\n# Overvie
w\n\nFor the last few years\, research in DNA and RNA has been dominated b
y short-read sequencing. Although this has revolutionized the way we answe
r biological questions\, it has its limitations. One important limitation
is read length. The invention of high-throughput long-read sequencing has
enabled us to solve questions on genome assembly\, haplotyping\, structura
l variation and alternative splicing. In this course\, the participant wil
l get acquainted with the major long-read sequencing technologies (PacBio
SMRT and Oxford Nanopore Technology)\, and get experience with hands-on wo
rk involving long-read data.\nThe training materials for this course are i
 n its dedicated [GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-longreads-trainin
g/) page.\nThe course includes a guest lecture from [Dr. Alban Ramette](ht
 tps://www.ifik.unibe.ch/research/bioinformatics__biostatistics___alban_ram
 ette/index_eng.html) and [Dr. Pamela Nicholson](https://www.ngs.unibe.ch/a
 bout_us/person/dr_nicholson_pamela/).\n\n# Audience\n\nThis course is addr
essed to anyone working with or interested in working with long-read data.
\n\n# Learning outcomes\n\nAt the end of the course\, the participants are
expected to:\n\n* Understand the basics behind PacBio SMRT sequencing and
Oxford Nanopore Technology sequencing\n* Use the command line to perform
quality control and read alignment of long-read sequencing data\n* Be able
to do differential isoform expression analysis or a repeat expansion anal
 ysis based on long-read sequencing data\n\n# Prerequisites\n\n***Knowledge
/ competencies***\n\nYou should meet the learning outcomes of either [Fir
st Steps with UNIX in Life Sciences](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course
 /20240912_FSWU)\nor the e-learning course [UNIX Fundamentals](https://www.
sib.swiss/training/course/2012_UNIXF).\n\nIn case of doubt\, evaluate your
Unix skills with this quiz before registering.\n\n***Technical***\n\nYou
are required to bring your own laptop. Software installation instructions
will be communicated before the course.\n\n# Schedule\n\nSee [Course sche
 dule](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-longreads-training/latest/course_sch
edule/)\n\n# Application\n\nThe registration fees for academics are **200
CHF** and **1000 CHF** for for-profit companies.\n\nWhile participants are
registered on a first come\, first serve basis\, exceptions may be made t
o ensure diversity and equity.\n\nApplications will close as soon as the p
laces will be filled up\, but not later than **12/02/2026**. Deadline for
free-of-charge cancellation is set to **12/02/2026**. Cancellation after t
his date will not be reimbursed. Please note that participation in SIB cou
rses is subject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training
/terms-and-conditions).\n\nYou will be informed by email of your registrat
ion confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants
will be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\n#
Venue and Time\n\nThis course will take place at the University of Bern.\
n\nIt will start at 9:15 CET and end around 17:15 CET.\n\nPrecise informat
ion will be provided to the registered participants in due time. \n\n# Ad
ditional information\n\nCoordination: Valeria Di Cola\, SIB Training Group
\n\nWe will recommend 0.5 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exa
m at the end of the course).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB cou
rses mailing list to be informed of all future courses and workshops\, as
well as all important deadlines using the form [here](https://lists.sib.sw
iss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB co
urses is subject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/trainin
g/terms-and-conditions).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](htt
 ps://elixir-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participants of SIB course
s are also required to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more information\, p
