DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nNext Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods have had a
large impact on many biological fields due to a very rapid decrease in co
st and throughput. It often results in hundreds of gigabytes of data. This
can make the downstream analysis challenging and requires bioinformatics
skills.\n\nIn this module\, we will introduce the most used sequencing tec
hnologies and explain their concepts. Using different datasets\, we will p
ractice quality control\, alignment of reads to a reference genome and vis
ualize the output.\n\nThe course materials can be found in the dedicated [
 GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-introduction-training/latest/) pag
e.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is intended for life scientists who are alre
ady dealing with NGS data and would like to be able to start analysing the
m.\n\n# Learning Objectives\nAt the end of the course participants should
be able to:\n* understand the basics of the different NGS technologies\n*
perform quality control for better downstream analysis \n* align reads to
 a reference genome \n* visualize the output.\n\n# Prerequisites\n##### *Kn
 owledge / competencies:*\nParticipants should have a basic understanding o
f working with the command line on UNIX-based systems like Linux or Mac. I
f you do not feel comfortable with UNIX commands\, please take our [UNIX f
 undamentals](https://edu.sib.swiss/course/view.php?id=82) e-learning modul
e or attend one of the "[First Steps with UNIX in Life Sciences](https://w
 ww.sib.swiss/training/course/20240116_FSWU)" courses.\n##### *Technical:*\
nSoftware requirements will be communicated before the course.\n\n# Applic
ation\n\n\nRegistration fees for academics are **300 CHF** and **1500 CHF*
 * for for-profit companies. While participants are registered on a first c
ome\, first served basis\, exceptions may be made to ensure diversity and
equity\, which may increase the time before your registration is confirmed
.\n\nApplications will close as soon as the places will be filled up. Dead
line for free-of-charge cancellation is set to **01/04/2024**. Cancellatio
n after this date will not be reimbursed. \n\nYou will be informed by emai
l of your registration confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation em
ail\, participants will be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees
 within 5 days.\n\n# Location &amp\; Time\nThis course will be streamed.\n\
nThis course will start at 9:00 and end around 17:00.\nPrecise information
will be provided to the participants on due time.\n\n\n# Additional infor
 mation\n\nCoordination: Grégoire Rossier\, SIB Training group.\n\nWe will
recommend 0.75 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exam at the e
nd of the course).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB courses maili
ng list to be informed of all future courses and workshops\, as well as al
l important deadlines using the form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailma
n/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB courses is s
 ubject to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-an
d-conditions).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](https://elixi
r-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participants of SIB courses are also
required to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more information\, please cont
