DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nNext Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods have had a
large impact on many biological fields due to a very rapid decrease in co
st and throughput. It often results in hundreds of gigabytes of data. This
can make the downstream analysis challenging and requires bioinformatics
skills.\n\nIn this module\, we will introduce the most used sequencing tec
hnologies and explain their concepts. Using different datasets\, we will p
ractice quality control\, alignment of reads to a reference genome and vis
ualize the output.\n\nThe course materials can be found in the dedicated [
 GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-introduction-training/latest/) pag
e.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is intended for life scientists who are alre
ady dealing with NGS data and would like to be able to start analysing the
m.\n\n# Learning Objectives\nAt the end of the course participants should
be able to:\n* understand the basics of the different NGS technologies\n*
perform quality control for better downstream analysis \n* align reads to
 a reference genome \n* visualize the output.\n\n# Prerequisites\n##### *Kn
 owledge / competencies:*\nParticipants should have a basic understanding o
f working with the command line on UNIX-based systems like Linux or Mac. I
f you do not feel comfortable with UNIX commands\, please take our [UNIX f
 undamentals](https://edu.sib.swiss/pluginfile.php/2878/mod_resource/conten
t/4/couselab-html/content.html) e-learning module or attend one of the "[F
irst Steps with UNIX in Life Sciences](https://www.sib.swiss/training/cour
 se/20230110_FSWU)".\n##### *Technical:*\nParticipants should bring their o
wn computers. Software requirements will be communicated before the course
.\n\n# Application\n\n\nRegistration fees for academics are **300 CHF** an
d **1500 CHF** for for-profit companies. While participants are registered
on a first come\, first served basis\, exceptions may be made to ensure d
iversity and equity\, which may increase the time before your registration
is confirmed.\n\nApplications will close as soon as the places will be fi
lled up. Deadline for free-of-charge cancellation is set to **01/05/2023**
. Cancellation after this date will not be reimbursed. \n\nYou will be inf
ormed by email of your registration confirmation. Upon reception of the co
nfirmation email\, participants will be asked to confirm attendance by pay
ing the fees within 5 days.\n\n# Location &amp\; Time\nThis course will ta
ke place at the University of Bern.\n\nThis course will start at 9:15 and
end around 17:15 CEST.\nPrecise information will be provided to the partic
ipants on due time.\n\n\n# Additional information\n\nCoordination: Diana M
arek\, SIB Training group.\n\nWe will recommend 0.75 ECTS credits for this
course (given a passed exam at the end of the course).\n\nYou are welcome
to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all future
courses and workshops\, as well as all important deadlines using the form
 [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nPlease note t
hat participation in SIB courses is subject to our [general conditions](ht
 tps://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditions).\n\nSIB abides by the [
 ELIXIR Code of Conduct](https://elixir-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct).
Participants of SIB courses are also required to abide by the same code.\
