DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nNext Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods have had a
large impact on many biological fields due to a very rapid decrease in co
st and throughput. It often results in hundreds of gigabytes of data. This
can make the downstream analysis challenging and requires bioinformatics
skills.\n\nIn this module\, we will introduce the most used sequencing tec
hnologies and explain their concepts. Using different datasets\, we will p
ractice quality control\, alignment of reads to a reference genome and vis
ualize the output.\n\nThe course materials can be found in the dedicated [
 GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-introduction-training/latest/) pag
e.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is intended for life scientists who are alre
ady dealing with NGS data and would like to be able to start analysing the
m.\n\n# Learning Objectives\nAt the end of the course participants should
be able to:\n* understand the basics of the different NGS technologies\n*
perform quality control for better downstream analysis \n* align reads to
 a reference genome \n* visualize the output.\n\n# Prerequisites\n##### Kno
wledge / competencies:\nParticipants should have a basic understanding of
working with the command line on UNIX-based systems like Linux or Mac. If
you do not feel comfortable with UNIX commands\, please take our [UNIX fun
 damentals](https://edu.sib.swiss/course/view.php?name=UNIX_I) e-learning m
odule or attend one of the "[First Steps with UNIX in Life Sciences](https
://www.sib.swiss/training/course/20220111_FSWU)" that we propose in 2022.\
n##### Technical:\nParticipants should bring their own computers. Software
requirements will be communicated before the course.\n\n# Application\n\n
\nThe registration fees for academics are **180 CHF** and **900 CHF** for
for-profit companies.\n\nYou will be informed by email of your registratio
n confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants wi
ll be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\nDea
dline for registration and free-of-charge cancellation is set to *06/02/20
23*. Cancellation after this date will not be reimbursed.\n\nPlease note t
hat participation to SIB courses is subject to this and other general cond
 itions\, available [here](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditi
ons).\n\nYou will be informed by email of your registration confirmation.\
n# Location &amp\; Time\nThis course will take place at the University of
Bern.\nThis course will start at 9:15 and end around 17:15. Precise inform
ation will be provided to the participants on due time.\n\n\n# Additional
information\n\nThe course will be taught by Geert van Geest.\n\n\nCoordina
tion: Valeria Di Cola\, SIB Training group.\n\nWe will recommend 0.75 ECTS
credits for this course (given a passed exam at the end of the course).\n
\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be inform
ed of all future courses and workshops\, as well as all important deadline
 s using the form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).
\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB courses is subject to our [gener
 al conditions](http://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditions).\n\nSIB
abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](https://elixir-europe.org/events/c
ode-of-conduct). Participants of SIB courses are also required to abide by
the same code.\n\nFor more information\, please contact [training@sib.swi
