DESCRIPTION:*This course will be streamed only for the registered participa
nts. Registered participants will receive specific information directly fr
 om the respective course’s organizers.* \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n# Overview\nIn
many domains of life sciences\, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods
have become an indispensable part of research and clinical practice. Due t
o its massive throughput and versatile applications\, like genomics\, tran
scriptomics\, epigenomics and metagenomics\, it supports knowledge generat
ion in a broad range of applications. However\, sequencing experiments res
ult in (very) large datasets\, with specific file formats\, which can make
the downstream analysis challenging. \n\nIn this course\, you will learn
about the background of most used sequencing technologies and about the co
ncepts of quality control and read alignment. You will put this knowledge
into practice by performing hands-on exercises in which you will learn how
to perform such analysis with the command line. To make interpretation of
the analysis results easier\, you will learn how visualize the output usi
ng a genome browser. After performing all analysis steps in a guided manne
r\, you will work on a mini project to learn how to apply the learnt skill
s more independently. \n\nIf you have some experience with the command li
ne\, and are ready to get started with NGS analysis\, this course is for y
ou. \n\n \nAre you getting curious? All course materials can be found on
 the dedicated [GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-introduction-trai
ning/latest/) page.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is intended for life scient
ists who are already dealing with NGS data and would like to be able to st
art analysing them. \n\n# Learning Objectives\nAt the end of the course pa
rticipants should be able to:\n* understand the basics of the different NG
S technologies\n* perform quality control for better downstream analysis \
n* align reads to a reference genome \n* visualize the output\n\n# Prerequ
 isites\n##### *Knowledge / competencies:*\nParticipants should have a basi
c understanding of working with the command line on UNIX-based systems lik
e Linux or Mac. If you do not feel comfortable with UNIX commands\, please
  take our [UNIX fundamentals](https://edu.sib.swiss/course/view.php?name=U
NIX_I) e-learning module or attend one of the "[First Steps with UNIX in L
 ife Sciences](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/20230110_FSWU)".\n####
 # *Technical:*\nParticipants should bring their own computers. Software re
quirements will be communicated before the course.\n\n# Application\n\n\nR
egistration fees for academics are **300 CHF** and **1500 CHF** for for-pr
ofit companies. While participants are registered on a first come\, first
served basis\, exceptions may be made to ensure diversity and equity\, whi
ch may increase the time before your registration is confirmed.\n\nApplica
tions will close as soon as the places will be filled up. Deadline for fre
e-of-charge cancellation is set to **06/11/2024**. Cancellation after this
date will not be reimbursed. \n\nYou will be informed by email of your re
gistration confirmation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, partic
ipants will be asked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 day
 s.\n\n# Location &amp\; Time\nThis course will be streamed.\n\nThis course
will start at 9:00 and end around 17:00.\nPrecise information will be pro
vided to the participants on due time.\n\n\n# Additional information\n\nCo
ordination: Valeria Di Cola\, SIB Training group.\n\nWe will recommend 0.7
5 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exam at the end of the cour
se).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be
informed of all future courses and workshops\, as well as all important de
 adlines using the form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/postorius/lists/cour
ses.lists.sib.swiss/).\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB courses is
