DESCRIPTION:# Overview\nNext Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods have had a
large impact on many biological fields due to a very rapid decrease in co
st and throughput. It often results in hundreds of gigabytes of data. This
can make the downstream analysis challenging and requires bioinformatics
skills.\n\nIn this module\, we will introduce the most used sequencing tec
hnologies and explain their concepts. Using different datasets\, we will p
ractice quality control\, alignment of reads to a reference genome and vis
ualize the output.\n\nThe course materials can be found in the dedicated [
 GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-introduction-training/latest/) pag
e.\n\n# Audience\nThis course is intended for life scientists who are alre
ady dealing with NGS data and would like to be able to start analysing the
m.\n\n# Learning Objectives\nAt the end of the course participants should
be able to:\n* understand the basics of the different NGS technologies\n*
perform quality control for better downstream analysis \n* align reads to
 a reference genome \n* visualize the output.\n\n# Prerequisites\n##### *Kn
 owledge / competencies:*\nParticipants should have a basic understanding o
f working with the command line on UNIX-based systems like Linux or Mac. I
f you do not feel comfortable with UNIX commands\, please take our [UNIX f
 undamentals](https://edu.sib.swiss/course/view.php?name=UNIX_I) e-learning
module or attend one of the "[First Steps with UNIX in Life Sciences](htt
 ps://www.sib.swiss/training/course/20230110_FSWU)".\n##### *Technical:*\nP
articipants should bring their own computers. Software requirements will b
 e communicated before the course.\n\n# Application\n\n\nRegistration fees
for academics are **300 CHF** and **1500 CHF** for for-profit companies. W
hile participants are registered on a first come\, first served basis\, ex
ceptions may be made to ensure diversity and equity\, which may increase t
he time before your registration is confirmed.\n\nApplications will close
as soon as the places will be filled up. Deadline for free-of-charge cance
llation is set to **08/11/2023**. Cancellation after this date will not be
reimbursed. \n\nYou will be informed by email of your registration confir
mation. Upon reception of the confirmation email\, participants will be as
ked to confirm attendance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\n# Location
&amp\; Time\nThis course will take place at the University of Bern.\n\nThi
s course will start at 9:15 and end around 17:15.\nPrecise information wil
l be provided to the participants on due time.\n\n\n# Additional informati
on\n\nCoordination: Valeria Di Cola\, SIB Training group.\n\nWe will recom
mend 0.75 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exam at the end of
the course).\n\nYou are welcome to register to the SIB courses mailing lis
t to be informed of all future courses and workshops\, as well as all impo
rtant deadlines using the form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/list
info/courses).\n\nPlease note that participation in SIB courses is subject
  to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-cond
itions).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code of Conduct](https://elixir-euro
pe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participants of SIB courses are also requi
red to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more information\, please contact [t
