DESCRIPTION:Python has gained tremendous popularity in scientific computing
owing to the extensibility of the language\, the rich ecosystem and being
a convenient languages for scientists to develop and prototype codes prod
uctively. While using Python may offer many ways to achieve the same resul
t\, finding the most efficient means to do so for better performance and s
calability can be a challenge. This course is focused on some of the ways
to optimise and parallel scientific Python codes\, encompassing subjects s
uch as performance analysis\, efficient use of scientific libraries (e.g.
NumPy)\, extending Python to use more efficient languages (e.g. Cython) to
carry out multi-processing using threads and the Message Passing Interfac
 e (MPI) on HPC systems.\n\nThe 2-day course\, split over 4 afternoons\, wi
ll cover the following topics:\n\n\n	Efficient use of NumPy\n	Performance
Analysis\n	Using Cython and optimisations\n	Interfacing with external libr
 aries\n	Multi-processing using threads\n	Parallel computing using mpi4py\n
\n\nParticipation in the course is free of charge for both academia and in
dustry.\n\nThis course is now fully booked. In order to cater for any addi
tional demand\, we have set up a waiting list for this course in case of c
ancellations\, and potentially organise another edition in the next few mo
nths. Please register here to be placed on the waiting list.\n\nFormat\n\n
This course will be conducted remotely via Zoom (meeting details will be s
ent to registrants at the start of the course). It is split over the follo
 wing sessions (4x afternoons):\n\n\n	Day 1: Tue 24 November 2020 - 1pm - 4
 .45pm (GMT)\n	Day 2: Fri 27 November 2020 - 1pm - 4.45pm (GMT)\n	Day 3: T
 ue 1 December 2020 - 1pm - 4.30pm (GMT)\n	Day 4: Fri 4 December 2020 - 1
pm - 4.45pm (GMT)\n\n\nYou will only need a web browser to carry out the p
ractical exercises.\n\nPrerequisites\n\nEach participant is expected to ha
ve a basic knowledge of Python\, including:\n\n\n	syntax\n	basic data stru
 ctures (lists\, arrays\, tuples\, dictionaries)\n	control structures (if-e
 lse statements\, for/while loops)\n	functions and modules\n\n\nSome prior
experience/knowledge of NumPy and the C programming language will be usef
 ul but not strictly required.\nhttps://events.prace-ri.eu/event/1107/
