DESCRIPTION:The Open Life Science program helps **early stage researchers a
nd potential academic leaders** in becoming **Open Science ambassadors**.\
n\nAny questions? We are here to help - feel free to email [hello@openlife
sci.org](mailto:hello@openlifesci.org) or connect with us on Twitter [@ope
 nlifesci](https://twitter.com/openlifesci). \n\n## About\n\nThis is a **15
-week long personal mentorship and cohort-based training**\, where partici
pants (organisers\, hosts\, mentors and mentees) of this program will:\n-
share their expertise and gain knowledge essential to create\, lead\, and
sustain an Open Science project\n- connect with members across different p
 rojects\, communities\, backgrounds\, and identities\n- empower each other
to become effective Open Science ambassadors in their communities\n\nWe a
re recruiting for our first cohort of mentees for the first round that sta
rts in January 2020. We are also inviting mentors\, experts and content de
velopers to join us in shaping this program.\n\n## Projects\n\nParticipant
s will join this program with a project that they either are already worki
ng on or want to develop during this program.\n\nYour project ideas can ra
nge from solving technical questions\, to creating an open data project
or report\, developing open source software project\, writing open publica
tion\, facilitating community/team culture movements\, advancing open educ
ational resource or contributing to other existing projects/community.\n\n
All applications are welcome\, whether your project is just an idea at thi
s stage\, or something that is running for years\, but\, your projects mus
t:\n\n- promote one or several [Open Science practices](https://www.foster
 openscience.eu/content/what-open-science-introduction) (i.e. Open Access\,
  Open Source\, Citizen Science\, ) in life science\n- state a possible mea
surable outcome (i.e. feature\, module\, or minimum viable product) from t
his program\n- create an inclusive space and welcome contributions from th
eir community members\n\n### Why focus on life science?\n\nModern life sci
ence and related communities stand in the interface of computational and b
iological research. This position provides an exciting opportunity for new
scientists to understand and welcome "open by design" practices.\n\nWe un
derstand that our curriculum is applicable to various fields\, but we want
to focus on life science community/projects with this program due to an u
rgent need to promote open practices in this field.\n\nIf you have a proje
ct idea that is not directly related to life science\, we will ask you to
describe how you aim to advance openness in life science through your work
.\n\n### What's in it for you?\n\nWe want to make this program mutually be
neficial for all the participants.\nHere are a few values we think you wil
l receive from participating in this project.\n\n- Become a contributing m
ember of this community\n- Collaborate with others in Open Science project
s\n- Exchange skills with others and build your own profiles\n- Highlight
and promote your resources\n- Gain insights from other experts in the fiel
 d\n- Work on a short-term projects and publish online\n- Get recognition a
nd acknowledgement for your work\n- Co-develop this program by sharing fee
dback\n\n## Timeline\n\n\n\n## The program itself\n\n*To illustrate the pr
ogram\, we will share the persona/story of Joy\, a mentee participating in
the program\, and Sam\, their personal mentor\, as they progress through
their open science journey.*\n\nIn their applications\, they will indicate
their interests in the topics related to Open Science in bioinformatics.
Joy will provide a short outline of their project\, and Sam will list thei
r expertise that they want to share with their mentee.\n\nAfter the select
ion process\, they will be involved in the following steps of this program
:\n\n1. Based on their common interests\, they will be introduced to each
other as suitable mentee and mentor\n\n They will meet every 2 weeks. I
n these **mentee-mentor calls** (around 30 minutes)\, Sam will help Joy ev
aluate their understanding of the new topics\, and review their progress b
y providing constructive feedback. Joy will be given relevant exercises be
fore these calls to help them apply new skills in their project. When need
ed\, Joy and Sam will be able to connect with other [experts](about#expert
 s) and get consulted on their project.\n\n2. Joy will participate to onlin
e calls where relevant contents related to Open Life Science is shared and
discussed with all participants of the program.\n\n In these **cohort
calls**\, the program leaders will introduce new topics and resources\, fa
cilitate break-out discussions\, and invite experts from the field to give
talks. In the first call Joy will get to know all the participants of the
program\, present their project\, learn about others' projects. A final c
ohort call will allow Joy to present their project to other participants a
nd exchange values.\n\n3. Sam will participate to **mentoring training** w
ith topic-based discussions with other mentors aimed at enhancing their me
 ntoring skills.\n\nAfter the 15 weeks of the program\, a self-evaluation s
urvey will help Joy and Sam in positioning their knowledge in open science
leadership before and after the program.\n\nFor the next round\, Joy may
share what they learnt by mentoring a project and Sam continue their mento
 r effort and/or become an expert\n\n## Applications\n\nThis program will f
ocus on Open Science in the life sciences and bioinformatics domains.\n\nW
e are particularly keen to connect with the participants from less-represe
nted European countries such as Hungary\, Greece\, Estonia\, and Cyprus. W
e also invite applicants from outside Europe\, particularly from developin
g countries (e.g. India and Africa - who are also timezone-compatible).\n\
nCohort calls will be conducted in English. However\, our participants who
have different primary languages such as Spanish\, French\, German\, Hind
i\, and Portuguese\, will be paired with mentors who can communicate in th
 eir preferred languages.\n
