DESCRIPTION:This course will present the state of the art in the developmen
t of parallel direct methods for sparse linear systems. \n\nIt is organiz
ed in conection with IT4Innovations\, Ostrava\, Czech Republic.  The cour
se will be held jointly with the Seminar on Numerical Analysis and Winter
School 2017 (SNA)\, held on 30 January - 3 February 2017. See the PLA web
page at IT4Innovations for further details. \n\nSome of these methods pr
esented are implemented as black box solvers\; the corresponding toolkit
s will be experimented in dedicated hand-on sessions.\nThe course will als
o present recent work on hybrid (direct / iterative) methods that better e
xploit the two-level structure of current parallel architectures.\n\nConte
 nt:\n\nDirect solvers:\n	Dense matrices (serial and parallel\, 1D and 2D d
 istributions)\n Sparse matrices (graph model\, renumbering\, elimination
graph\, symbolic and numeric factorizations)\n Parallel methods: data dis
tribution\, scheduling of computations and communications\n Hands-on with
the MUMPS and Pastix solvers\n	\n	               \n	Hybrid
methods\n	Basics on Krylov subspace methods\n Basics on algebraic domain
decomposition methods (Schur/Schwarz)\n Hybrid direct/iterative methods:
motivation and description of methods\n Hierarchical parallel implementa
tion and scalability issues\n	\n	 \n	Hands-on session with the MaPhys and
  HIPS solvers.\nInstructors\nM. Faverge (Bordeaux INP\, Bordeaux)\, L. Gir
 aud (Inria\, Bordeaux)\, Z. Strakos (Charles University\, Prague)\n\nLearn
ing outcomes\nUnderstand the main features of the direct and iterative met
hods\, their tradeoffs and when using them is most advisable.\nGain practi
cal experience with some state of the art solvers.Prerequisites\nBasic kno
wledge of linear algebra and parallel algorithms\nKnowledge of a programmi
 ng language (Fortran\, C\, C++)\nAbility to use Linux (Unix)\n\nhttps://ev
