DESCRIPTION:Content:\n This course will present the state of the art in th
e development of parallel direct methods for sparse linear systems. Some o
f these methods are being implemented as black box solvers\; the correspon
ding toolkits will be experimented in dedicated hand-on sessions.\n The c
ourse will also present recent work on hybrid (direct / iterative) methods
that better exploit the two-level structure of current parallel architect
ures.\n		 \n Direct solvers:\n \n Dense matrices (serial and paralle
 l\, 1D and 2D distributions)\n \n Sparse matrices (graph model\, renu
 mbering\, elimination graph\, symbolic and numeric factorizations)\n \n
Parallel methods: data distribution\, scheduling of computations and co
 mmunications\n \n Hands-on with the MUMPS and Pastix solvers\n \n
\n Hybrid methods\n Basics on Krylov sub
space methods\n \n Basics on algebraic domain decomposition methods (
 Schur/Schwarz)\n \n Hybrid direct/iterative methods: motivation and d
escription of methods\n \n Hierarchical parallel implementation and s
 calability issues\n \n		 \n Hands-on session with the MaPhys and HIPS s
 olvers.\nInstructors\nE. Agullo (Inria)\, M. Faverge (Bordeaux INP)\, L. G
 iraud (Inria)\, A. Guermouche (Université de Bordeaux )\,  J. Pedron (
 Inria)\, P. Ramet (Université de Bordeaux)Learning outcomes\nUnderstand t
he main features of the direct and iterative methods\, their tradeoffs and
when using them is most advisable.\nGain practical experience with some s
tate of the art solvers.Prerequisites\nBasic knowledge of linear algebra a
 nd parallel algorithms\nKnowledge of a programming language (Fortran\, C\,
