DESCRIPTION:\n\nTHE PERL COURSE IS CANCELLED DUE TO FEW APPLICANTS!\n\nCour
se content\nPerl is the ideal programming language for biological data ana
lysis. The course is for students with little or no prior knowledge in per
 l. Familiarity in using a Unix command line (e.g. Mac OSX or Linux) is a r
equirement for the course. It is aimed at students who need computational
skills to handle large datasets. The course will follow the book “Learni
ng Perl”. It will consist of lectures to introduce all topics and comput
er assignments to be completed individually after each lecture. The course
will also include practical computational exercises.\n\nTo complete the c
ourse\, students are expected to complete a short project\, either from th
eir own work or pre-defined.\n\nTopics covered will include:\n\nintroducti
on to command line and writing perl scripts\nhandling scalar data\, contro
 l structures\nlists/arrays\nsubroutines\ninput/output\nregular expressions
  and pattern matching\nconditional operators\nstrings and sorting\nloops\n
hashes\nintroduction to modules such as bioperl\nBy the end of the course\
, students should:\n\nunderstand and be able to implement all fundamental
elements of Perl programming\nbe able to write programs to perform common
bioinformatics tasks\nbe able to understand and debug Perl programs\nbe co
mpetent using a Unix environment\nEntry requirements\nTo get the maximum b
enefit from the course we would like you to\nBe able to bring your own Mac
or Linux laptop for the practical computational exercises. If you don’t
have a Mac or Linux computer to bring please contact us at education@scil
ifelab.uu.se before you apply.\nBe familiar in using the Unix command line
(Mac OSX or Linux). We will not teach Unix in detail in the course and yo
u will have considerable trouble to follow the practical computational exe
rcises if you are not reasonably used to work in a Unix. Other course are
available at SciLifeLab that introduce the basics in Unix.\nIt is strongly
recommended that students read the course book “Learning Perl\, 6th Edi
tion” (Schwartz et al.) before attending the course.\nSelection criteria
\nSelection criteria include correct entry requirements\, motivation to at
tend the course as well as gender and geographical balance.\n\nImportant d
 ates\nApplication open: May 8\nhttps://secure.webforum.com/form/scilifelab
