About the event:

This one-day workshop aims to encourage new and experienced mathematics postgraduate demonstrators to engage students, learn to self-criticise and gain confidence in their teaching. Postgraduates often lead small classes with an expectation that being confident in the mathematics is enough to teach successfully. The sessions aim to give demonstrators new skills and encourage conversations of already developed skills, from structuring classroom expectations to helping demonstrators reflect on their teaching using a toolkit of ideas.

In academia, many successful researchers hold lectureships with little teaching training. We hope this workshop will help postgraduate students transition to an academic career by allowing them to explore teaching and learning issues.

This workshop has been organised and developed using ideas and feedback from the community of postgraduate demonstrators at the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sheffield. It is part of the IMA Higher Education Teaching and Learning Series 2020.
