The gender pay gap has in recent years taken centre stage, generally as a single headline figure representing one of the remaining inequalities between men and women in the UK. This opening talk looks at the measurement in its broader socio-economic and (short and very long- run) historical context, and then provides a critical overview of the currently fiercely competing theoretical and empirical views on the meaning of this metric. We will also consider the relationship of this pay gap to other dimensions of gender equality and current international attempts at gender equality rankings.

15:45 – 16:20 How widespread was good & bad practice for gender pay gap reporting analysis in the UK in 2018? - Nigel Marriott CStat
By requiring all employers to publish their gender pay gaps, HR professionals are now required to be statisticians in addition to their day job. My 20 years of experience of teaching non-statisticians basic stats tells me that many employers will struggle to analyse & understand their pay gaps and to identify actions to close them. Rather than rely on my intuition, I have undertaken an in-depth audit of a stratified random sample of at least 250 employers to measure how well employers are reporting, analysing and interpreting their payroll data for pay gaps. My audit should highlight the best and worst practices and I will use this to make recommendations for improvements. These recommendations will build on the Royal Statistical Society’s 10 recommendations for improving gender pay gap reporting which can be found here.
