RSS Highlands - The Blessing of Dimensionality in Genomics Data
Date: No date given
About the event:
Our last talk of the year will be delivered by our Chair, Claus Mayer, from Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland, Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health, University of Aberdeen, on Wed 18th December. This will be followed by our AGM to which all members are welcome to attend. As Claus is stepping down as Chair we thought it would be fitting that he delivers the final talk of 2019. Please see the details below.
After the AGM please join us for a festive drink at The Queen Vic bar on Rosemount Place!

Claus Mayer: ‘The Blessing of Dimensionality in Genomics Data’
Summary: The presentation will discuss some general issues related to the analysis of very high-dimensional data like for example those arising from genomics studies. I will argue that the so-called “curse of dimensionality” is an overly negative phrase, that suggests a complete breakdown of statistics in these situations. I want to show that while high-dimensional data bring certain problems with them, they also offer several new opportunities and that certain analysis steps can actually become easier the more variables one studies.
