14.00-14.45 Dr Jamie Sergeant (University of Manchester): "Communicating medical statistics to the media and public"

Jamie Sergeant is a Lecturer in Biostatistics at the University of Manchester.  But before that he was a secondary school maths teacher and that’s where his interest in communicating statistics probably started.  While the quote “If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, then you don’t understand it yourself” is often attributed to Einstein, Jamie’s version from his former career might be “If you can’t think of a way to make this interesting for 30 lower-middle set Year 8s, then you’re going to be eaten alive”.  Jamie will talk about examples of communicating statistics to the media and public, including from the Cloudy with a Chance of Pain study of weather and chronic pain.

15.00-15.45 Prof. Jen Rogers (Phastar): "Living is a Risky Business"

Jen was the Royal Statistical Society Guy Lecturer for 2014 and since then she has been carried out many public engagement activities. She can regularly be found giving presentations in schools, theatres, and to the general public. In this talk, Jen will be sharing her experiences of communicating statistics to lay audiences and will be presenting excerpts from her talk "Living is a Risky Business" as examples.
