DESCRIPTION:Educators:\nOlaf Wolkenhauer (RBC / de.stairs)\n\nDate:\n16th M
 arch 2020\, 10:00 – 12:30\n\nLocation:\nOnline\n\nContents:\nIn this sem
inar I would like to share my experience as an applicant and reviewer for
proposals submitted for DFG\, BMBF and EU funding. Why? (i) Because I find
it difficult to write successful proposals. (ii) Because\, as a young sci
entist I would have liked to receive help for this important part of being
a scientist and (iii) because I was elected to a DFG Review panel\, by my
community\, and this is an opportunity to reward that trust.\n\nMy experi
ence is of course limited\, and the advice will not be universally valid.
However\, I do hope to provide inspiration and motivation for your own gra
nt proposal. Given that my own research is focused in the areas of bioinfo
rmatics\, systems biology/medicine\, the seminar should be of interest for
colleagues working on interdisciplinary research in the life sciences.\n\
nIdeally\, the seminar is a conversation and discussion\, with lots of que
stions being asked by the participants. During the seminar\, we shall iden
tify general pattern in successful grant proposals\, which also apply to o
ther forms of communication\, say in publications\, conference posters\, o
r websites. The goal is to provide practical advice for your next applicat
ion for a research grant.\n\nLearning goals:\n- Motivation and mindset (gr
antmanship)\n- Differences between BMBF and DFG proposals.\n - Analysing
  calls\n - Identifying a suitable DFG programme/panel\n- Drafting/outlin
ing the proposal\n - Length and effort\n - Dividing the proposal into
 sections\n- Identifying a research gap\n- Designing work packages\n- Creat
ing visual representations\n- Describing the state of the art and own prel
iminary work\n- Things to watch out for and common mistakes\n- Additional
documents and their role in the evaluation\n- Submission and rebuttals\n-
Practical advice for summarising and communicating your research\n\nPrereq
uisites:\nThe seminar is targeted at postdocs and junior group leaders. Ph
D students in their final year may benefit if they are in the process of w
riting a proposal at the time of this seminar.\n\nKeywords:\nGrantmanship\
