DESCRIPTION:Are you wondering how your research could benefit from workflow
containerisation?\n\nContainers enable you to package up an application a
nd its dependencies and encourage reproducibility\, portability and sharea
bility of computational workflows. This workshop explores the merits\, adv
antages and limitations of applying containers in bioinformatics.\n\nDurin
g the workshop you will:\n\n- learn and practice the basics of building\,
deploying and running applications in containers\n\n- explore real use cas
es related to biology\n\n- discuss tips and best practices\, and have your
questions answered.\n\nThis workshop will be delivered online through a c
ombination of presentations\, demonstrations and hands-on interactive exer
cises supported by containers experts. On day 1 you will learn new skills
through undertaking practical exercises and on day 2 you can bring your ow
n pipeline to get advice and tips in a small group setting.\n\n**Learning
outcomes**\n\nBy the end of the workshop you should be able to:\n\n- Ident
ify when you would benefit from using containers in your workflow\n\n- Dow
nload container images and run commands from inside a container using Sing
ularity\n\n- Identify popular image registries\n\n- Discuss the pros &amp\
; cons of building with Singularity vs Docker\n\n- Describe the basic synt
ax of a Dockerfile\n\n- Build and share an image with Docker\n\n- Convert
a Docker image into the Singularity format\n\n**Lead trainer:** TBC\n\n**D
 ate/time:** 12:30pm - 4:00pm AEDT/ 11:30am - 3:00pm AEST/ 12:00pm - 3:30pm
  ACDT / 9:30am - 1:00pm AWST Thursday 25 - Friday 26 March 2021\n\n**Who t
he workshop is for**\n\nBasic familiarity with UNIX shell concepts and com
mand line interactions are required. Participants do not need any previous
experience with containers.\n\nThis workshop is open to staff and student
s from Australian universities and research institutes.\n\n**How to apply*
*\n\nThe workshop is free but participation is subject to application with
selection.\n\nPlease note that applications that do not nominate an Austr
alian institute and do not provide an appropriate institutional email addr
ess will not be able to take part.\n\nApplications will be reviewed by the
organising committee and all applicants will be informed of the status of
their application (successful\, waiting list\, unsuccessful) by Friday 19
March 2021. Participants will be provided with a Zoom meeting link closer
to the date.\n\nPlease complete the application form if you are intereste
 d in attending this workshop.\n\n**Applications close 5pm AEDT Monday 15 M
 arch 2021.**\n\n[Apply here](https://biocommons-containers-2021.eventbrite

 s://www.biocommons.org.au/) and [Pawsey Supercomputing Centre](https://paw
sey.org.au/) with the assistance of a network of facilitators from the nat
 ional [Bioinformatics Training Cooperative](https://www.biocommons.org.au/
