DESCRIPTION:## Overview\nRecent advances in omics technologies allow us to
grasp the complexity of the immune system\, but data analysis and interpre
tation remain highly challenging. Data scientists require a basic understa
nding of immunology and associated methods to collaborate effectively and
efficiently in immunological research projects. \n\nIn this one-day course
we aim to close knowledge gaps and promote a general understanding of the
immune system. We will focus on immune cells and their functions\, as wel
l as on methods commonly applied in immunology that require bioinformatic
expertise. Moreover\, we will present ongoing projects and highlight commo
n challenges encountered by bioinformaticians and researchers in the field
of immunology. \n\n This course will **not** go into detail of the analys
is of the different datasets\, but rather provides an overview over the bi
oinformatics methods used in immunology. \n## Audience\nThis course is add
ressed to life scientists and bioinformaticians\, from academia or indus
try\, with little to no knowledge in immunology who are or will be worki
ng with immunological datasets. \n\n\n## Learning outcomes\nAt the end o
f the course\, the participants are expected to:\n* list the different cel
l types of the immune system and their function. \n\n* appreciate the com
plexity of the immune system and overlaps with other systems. \n\n* plan a
n immunological experiment / judge the quality of the experimental setup.
\n\n* explain how to analyze different types of data\, what the data looks
like\, and what pitfalls can occur during analysis. \n\n## Prerequisites\
n##### Knowledge / competencies\nThis course is designed for beginners in
 R. The competences and knowledge levels required correspond to those taugh
t in courses such as: First Steps with R in Life Sciences or Introduction
to statistics with R. \n\nEvaluate your R skills with the following [self
 -assessment](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIyeuabd_ZOWXgI1MWH
 apmaOMu20L9ESkLDZiWnpmkpujyOg/viewform).\n\n##### Technical\nYou are requi
red to bring your own laptop with a Wi-Fi connection\, and the following s
oftware installed PRIOR to the course: R\, R Studio. A list of packages wi
ll be provided in due time.\n\n## Schedule - CET time zone\n\n9:15 - 10:30

ion of the confirmation email\, participants will be asked to confirm atte
ndance by paying the fees within 5 days.\n\nDeadline for free-of-charge ca
ncellation is set to *11/10/2024*. Cancellation after this date will not b
e reimbursed. Please note that participation in SIB courses is subject to
 our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/training/terms-and-conditio
