DESCRIPTION:Phylogenetics is essential for comparing biological species and
understanding biodiversity for conservation. This workshop discusses the
basic principles and methods of phylogenetic inference and what you can le
arn from phylogenetic estimation. It is intended to help you make informed
decisions about which methods to use in your research.\n\nUsing real-life
data and standard tools that are (mostly) available in Galaxy\, the works
hop demonstrates the principles behind a variety of methods used to estima
te phylogenetic trees from aligned sequence data or distance data.\n\nThis
is not a "how to" workshop\, but is instead aimed at giving you a better
understanding of the principles of phylogenetics and how the methods work.
Maybe you've even built phylogenetic trees before but want to know more a
bout the principles behind the tools.\n\n**Lead Trainers:* *Professor Mich
 ael Charleston\, University of Tasmania.\n\n**Date/Time**: 1 July 2024\, 1
 1am - 3pm AEST / 10:30am - 2:30pm ACST / 9am - 1pm AWST\n\n**Location:** O
nline\n\n**Format:**\n\nIn this online workshop expert trainers will intro
duce new topics and guide you through hands-on activities to help you put
your new skills into action. The exercises we'll cover are beginner level
and make use of Galaxy Australia\, an online platform that lets you conduc
t accessible\, reproducible\, and transparent computational biological res
earch.\n\n**Learning outcomes:**\n\nBy the end of the workshop you should
be able to:\n\n* Describe the basic concepts behind phylogenetic trees and
how they are made\n* Read and interrogate a phylogeny encountered in the
literature\n* Use standard tools to align a set of molecular sequences\n*
Assess the quality of a molecular sequence alignment and be able to modify
it appropriately for phylogenetic analysis\n* Use standard tools to estim
ate a phylogenetic tree based on a set of aligned molecular sequences\n* A
ssess the reliability of estimated phylogenies with bootstrapping\n* Explo
re phylogenetic signal using phylogenetic networks\n\nWe will not cover:\n
\n* Workflows from read data to sequences\n* How to get an alignment (much
: will use automated methods)\n* Bayesian phylogenetics: MCMC / BEAST / Mr
Bayes\n\n**Who the workshop is for:**\n\nThis workshop is for Australian m
olecular biologists who want to know more about phylogenetic trees. You sh
ould know how molecular sequence data is produced and what it looks like.\
n\nSome familiarity with using Galaxy is assumed. No coding experience is
required.\n\nIf you are new to Galaxy you will need to [register for a fre
 e Galaxy Australia account](https://www.biocommons.org.au/galaxy-australia
). We recommend watching this [brief introduction to Galaxy Australia](htt
ps://youtu.be/i8ZnK8i8zRE) and working through the [Galaxy Basics for Ever
 yone tutorial](https://training.galaxyproject.org/training-material/topics
 /introduction/tutorials/galaxy-intro-101-everyone/tutorial.html) before jo
ining the workshop.\n\nYou must be associated with an Australian organisat
ion for your application to be considered.\n\n**How to apply:**\n\nThis wo
rkshop is free but participation is subject to application with selection.
  \n\nApplications close at **11:59pm AEST\, Friday 14 June 2024**.\n\nAppl
ications will be reviewed by the organising committee and all applicants w
ill be informed of the status of their application (successful\, waiting l
ist\, unsuccessful). Successful applicants will be provided with a Zoom me
eting link closer to the date. More information on the selection process i
s provided in our[ Advice on applying for Australian BioCommons workshops.
 ](https://www.biocommons.org.au/workshop-applications)\n\n**[Apply here] (

ented by the [Australian BioCommons](https://www.biocommons.org.au/) with
the assistance of a network of facilitators from the national [Bioinformat
 ics Training Cooperative](https://www.biocommons.org.au/training-cooperati
